Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This 16th-century treatise delves into the administrative complexities of Rouen during one pivotal year. Balancing historical account with legal commentary, the author provides a glimpse into the inner workings of civic governance. The book analyzes the composition and function of Rouen's intricate administrative bodies, from the central Council of 24 to the roles of advisors, pensioners, and auditors. It further explores the broader context of the era, examining the interplay between royal authority, local interests, and the influence of trade and commerce. The author argues that this administrative framework not only managed the city's daily affairs but also defended its privileges and negotiated its relationship with the crown, painting a vivid picture of urban governance and political maneuvering in Renaissance France. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a riveting and multifaceted exploration of the cahiers de dolà ances, the grievance notebooks drafted by the French people in 1789 on the eve of the French Revolution. These documents provide invaluable insights into the hopes, fears, and aspirations of the populace during this pivotal moment in history. The author meticulously analyzes the contents of 197 cahiers from towns and villages within the electoral district of Arques in the French province of Normandy. The book delves into the process of drafting these cahiers, including the dynamics between social classes and the role of local leaders. Through these cahiers, the author sheds light on a wide range of issues that preoccupied the French people. These included deep-seated economic grievances, such as inequitable taxation and land distribution, as well as profound concerns about political representation, the power of the monarchy, and the need for administrative reform. The book's analysis reveals not only the profound discontent that fueled the Revolution but also the nuanced and often contradictory views held by different segments of the population. By giving voice to the people of 1789, this work illuminates the complex social and political forces that shaped one of the most transformative events in human history.
