(4) -- Christ's College at this time was a seed-bed of puritan religion, a society with a character of its own which was not exactly matched by any other college in either university,and which it owed to a remarkable succession of tutors. While St. John's was thrown into a turmoil in the sixties bythe determination of the authorities to impose the surplice andthe square cap and by the truculent nonconformity of a faction of the fellows, and while the heads of Christ Church and Mag- dalen at Oxford, Thomas Sampson and Laurence Humphrey, postured as national leaders inthe same anti-vestiarian cause,a quieter and yet more potent move ment was at work in Christ's. Here there grew a puritan tradition moderate in its reaction to those questions of ceremonies and church order which are usually represented as the main ground of the puritan protest, but passion- ately indignant against the practical inadequacies ofthe Elizabethan Church and above all against its pastoral deficiencies. It was a tradition estab- lished and begun, in all probability, by Dering himself.' (6f.) -- `At the outset I said that Dering wasthe archetypal puritan divine.
