Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Book Club Edition. In red paper-covered boards. No statement of edition, no number line, no price to unclipped jacket front flap -- so this is a Book Club Edition, as stated to bottom of said jacket front flap. Boards, however, resist opening past 75 degrees --…as-new unread. Englishman John Grant made himself a successful career as a medical doctor, specializing in tropical diseases. Then he decided to see if he could also make a success in a second career, writing mystery novels set in the world of the antique dealers (and fakers) with whom he'd grown familiar while working his way through med school in the antique and junk shops of London's Portobello Road. "The Judas Pair" -- written under the pen name of Jonathan Gash -- was a huge success, and the Lovejoy series was off and running (though the first dozen are the best.) The antique trivia and expertise are still here in this, Lovejoy's 10th outing (published in Britain as "The Tartan Rip"), as is the charming conceit that Lovejoy -- despite his unerring ability to recognize a valuable antique where others see nothing but dusty junk -- can never seem to keep so much as his electric bill paid, as he constantly fails in his efforts to be a better crook and less of a soft touch for the latest victimized widow. In this one, Lovejoy journeys to the Scottish Highlands, finds many antiques missing from Castle McGunn, and organizes an auction to rescue the family's fortunes. Needless to say, skullduggery ensues. Ian La Frenais & Co. turned the books into a moderately long-running BBC TV series (1990-1994) starring Ian McShane, Dudley Sutton, Chris Jury & Phyllis Logan. Though for some reason runner Tinker Dill (Dudley Sutton) was considerably scrubbed up, while Gash's hero -- who in the books is not terribly successful at beating off the ladies with a stick -- was rendered virtually celibate for the home screen, leaving Caroline Langrishe (among others) to go largely to waste. 185 pp., reduced from $16. Jacket art by Paul Perlow (illustratore).

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. As new condition navy blue boards with gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Editor's Notes; Acknowledgments; Authors' Dedication; Prologue; Epilogue; Appendix: Forensic Science: Pas…t, Present and Future; Chapter Notes; and Bibliography. Illustrated with three section of black-and-white photographic plates. "Famous Crimes Revisited is Dr. Henry Lee's first look back at legendary crimes of the twentieth century. The world-renowned forensic scientist and his coauthor, Jerry Labriola, M.D., release never-before-disclosed facts and photographs that are certain to surprise you. Unlike many journalists, pundits and other authors who can only speculate, Dr. Lee speaks from an authoritative, firsthand perspective. Accolades include the following from the preeminent forensic pathologist, Dr. Cyril Wecht: "Imagine Sherlock Holmes, Charlie Chan and Quincy all rolled into one person. Combine their fictional intellectual brilliance, deductive skills and investigative prowess with knowledge of an access to every facet of modern day forensic scientific equipment and techniques. What does that give you? Henry Lee." Through Famous Crimes Revisited, join Dr. Lee in his journeys back in time. See how: The same forensic errors of the 1920s are still being made today; Public opinion can influence the outcome of criminal cases; Human error and/or misconduct can tarnish criminal investigations; Modern technology might have helped solve past cases. Judge for yourself. Was justice served beyond a reasonable doubt? Were innocent people convicted of murder? Did others go free?" - from the inner front jacket flap. "Dr. Henry Lee is a genius, the leading authority alive in the area of forensic science and a great detective. It is smiply fascinating to see the most famous cases of our time through the eyes of the Sherelock Holmes of the 20th century. There is much to learn from this engrossing book." - Barry Scheck, Brooklyn, New York, Defense Attorney for O.J. Simpson. "A great forensic thriller that once again demonstrates how rea life can be more exciting and incomprehensible than any work of fiction. A surefire bestseller." - Cyril Wecht, M.D., J.D., Coroner, County of Allegheny, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. "Having worked closely with Dr. Henry Lee, it comes as no surprise that the book he has authored with Dr. Jerry Labriola is a blueprint for successful analysis of some of the most famous crimes of the century. Just follow the carefully observed details of the times and the crimes to reach your own conclusion about whether justice was truly done." - Susan Dannelly, Assistant State Attorney, Miami, Florida. "A fast pace read about some (in)famous cases .of the 20th century with an empahasis on the forensic science aspects - informative for the public and instructional for the practitioner." - Haskell Pitluck, 19th Judicial Circuit Judge, State of Illinois. Perlow, Paul (cover design); Misencik, Jay (cover photo/montage) (illustratore).
