Hardcover. Condizione: Good+. Condizione sovraccoperta: No dust jacket. First edition. RARE DELUXE FIRST ISSUE - Volume II only - in three-quarters dark brown morocco leather and gilt boards, marble endpapers, profusely illustrated with sketches by numerous illustrators of the Civil War (Leslie, Forbes, Taylor, Hall, Becker, Waud, Lovie, Schell, Crane and many others), frontis. illustration of Abraham Lincoln with tissue guard, intro. by Robert B. Beath, detailed index to historical matter, 421pp. in Vol. I. Good+ with typical wear to extremities, corners worn through, front hinge has some paper loss but both bindings strong for such a large book (see photos). Nevins says these volumes "liberally illustrated with familiar battle scenes." It is indeed liberally/profusely illustrated with battle scenes + many battle maps and plans. It is likely the most comprehensive reference to the Civil War - certainly to depictions of the battles and soldiers. A rare and collectible volume.
