"Second Impression with corrections" (i.e. revised second printing of the 1927 edition). xv, [1], 359, [1] pages. Hardcover: H 23.25cm x L 15.5cm. No dust jacket. Quality quarter leather binding; black leather spine with four raised bands; s few surface scuffs to bands and joints; brown label in second compartment from head with "MCKERROW 1928" stamped in gilt; blind stamped conjoined monogram "GD" in bottom compartment; slight bowing to blue cloth boards. Toning to deckle edges. Ink name stamp "Giles E. Dawson," on front free endpaper; a few scattered stains and soiling; ink and pencil marks on pages 16-17; short tears at top margins of pages 13-20; blue wax pencil underlining on pages 25-28; red pencil marks and notes on pages 156-157; pencil notes at margins of pages 14, 46, 83, 168, and 245; no other such markings (all of which are presumably by Dr. Dawson) are readily apparent upon a quick perusal but certainly may be present. Binding is firm. Between pages 38-39 is tipped-in b/w plate emulating (but not duplicating) the underlying b/w image on page 39. Laid-in at front endpapers is an old card catalog slip with three-line pencil note "Dr. Dawson: | Many thanks, | Bernard Peebles." on its blank verso; Bernard Mann Peebles (1906-1976) earned his masters and doctorate degrees from Harvard University and was a member of the renowned U.S. Army Monuments Men unit during World War II after which he taught at Washington D.C.'s Catholic University from 1948 to 1970 with his last eight years chairing the Department of Greek and Latin. Shakespeare scholar Dr. Giles Edwin Dawson (1903-1994) joined the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. as a reference librarian in 1932 and, after World War II service, was the Folger's curator of books and manuscripts from 1946 until his retirement in 1967. Dr. Dawson additionally served on the Catholic University faculty from 1935 to 1972 and taught at Howard University from 1975 to 1977. As evidenced by the aforementioned spine monogram, the binding was done as a custom order for Dr. Dawson; unfortunately no bindery ticket or mark is present but it was likely crafted by Washington, DC binder with a strong likelihood that it may have been done at the Folger's in-house bindery-conservation department.
