Summary:Driekops Eiland is situated on the Riet River, a tributary of the Orange River, south west of Kimberley. In the wet season, when the river floods, the engravings are completely submerged, bu…t in the dry season the water trickles down into a narrow bed at the side of the engraved rocks, leaving the whole surface exposed to the onlooker. It is possible that Driekops Eiland was on, or near the end of, an ancient trade route. The deep diamond mine at Kimberley, which is only forty miles away from this site, developed from a few rough stones found on the surface. These stones may have been the remains of a substantial deposit worked in ancient times. In "The Rock Engravings of Griqualand West and Bechuanaland, South Africa", Dr. M. Wilman states that in her experiments stone and steel tools fail to produce a satisfactory pitted engraving and only diamond (boart) will serve. These engravings are the work of considerable artists, perhaps men of a far more developed civilization than is generally suspected. If this is true it is likely that Driekops Eiland, with its high proportion of cosmic signs and ideographs, was an important centre for their religious festivities.
