Condizione: Very Good. 12mo. iv, 236pp. Full calf with gilt bands along the spine creating six compartments, in the second compartment from the top is a black leather label with "Perrine's Letters" in gilt. Boards and spine are worn, particularly along the edges, corners bumped, light dampstaining to both pastedowns with one on the rear pastedown lightly affecting a few final pages, still a sound and very good copy. Perrine was born in Freehold. Monmouth County, N.J. in 1777. He graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1797 and was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of New Brunswick in 1799. Perrine bounced around a few churches in New Jersey before landing at the Spring Street Church in New York City in 1811, the same church where he first spoke on the material that makes up this book. The Presbyterian Spring Street Church is significant as it was one of the first racially integrated churches in New York City, holding integrated Sunday school classes and offering full communion to African-Americans. The church was well known for its abolitionist stance and as a result was attacked and nearly destroyed during the anti-abolitionist riots of 1834. The church was restored and remained in service until 1963. This book serves as a small memento from the church as it is mentioned by name on the title page, "Addressed to the members of the Presbyterian Church, Spring Street, New York.".…
