Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover. Condizione: Very Good. Second Revised Edition. 193 p. 23 cm. Sound and square binding in cardstock covers. Light crease to rear top fore-corner and a little bending to a few of the last pages at that corner. Minor wear otherwise. Except for the author's inscription, the inside pages are clean and unmarked. An autobiography of a labour union organizer who was from Cape Breton. Laid in is a double sided handwritten letter from the author to a "Brother" to catch him up on the highlights of his political and activist life. It seems he was still fighting for the rights of men into his retirement years. The book is inscribed to the same person and signed by the author on the title page.

Laid in is a newspaper article about the launch of the book. Minor staining to front cover. The first volume in a popular series of books about the Saint John Police Force. It covers the transition of the force from an informal organization to a militaristic organization under the autocratic leadership of Chief W. Walter Clark (spoiler alert - he didn't last!). Lots of strange crimes and bizarre criminals here, including a plot by a former asylum inmate to murder Saint John ministers with gifts of poisoned chocolates! Gerald Wallace was the Saint John Police Chief from 1965-1969, and William Higgins was also a police officer. The third author, Peter McGahan is a professor at University of New Brunswick. Notes and Index. Scarce. 143 pp. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author(s). Book.

Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover / Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. Softcover. In January, 1896, a young girl was murdered in her home in Bear River, Nova Scotia. In October of the same year, a fire at a house in Meadow Brook, New Brunswick, masked a robbery and beating. The murder at Bear River, the Meadow Brook tragedy, the problems with vagrants in Charlottetown. For this vivid account of crimes and criminals - from con-men to murderers, from vagrants to bigamists - the author has gathered information from newspapers and official records to tell the stories of the outcasts, vagabonds, thieves and killers who populate the darker corners of Maritime history. In the author's account, the "world we have lost" in the Maritimes was not a peaceful world. There were preachers who were also bigamists; policemen who were motivated by revenge; ordinary citizens who suddenly engaged in "unnatural" acts. The author demonstrates that where crime is concerned, the boundaries are not set by geography but by the unpredictable impulses of men and women. Illus. 192pp. trade size softcover. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. V+.
