Da: Between the Covers-Rare Books, Inc. ABAA, Gloucester City, NJ, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Small oblong octavo measuring 5.5" x 4.5". String-tied red leather. Contains 96 sepia-toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2" x 2" and 3" x 3.5" with captions. Good only with chips, tears, lacking the spine, with near fine photographs. A photo album kept by Dorothy Phelps, a young woman living in Connecticut around 1910. The album takes place over a summer and shows Phelps and her family and friends enjoying leisure time by the beach. Many of the photos show ships off the New England coast including one that is captioned "racers." Other photos show Phelps and her young girlfriends posed in bathing costumes on a dock. Other photos show them swimming and diving off the dock. She photographs Falkner's Lighthouse and includes a well composed photo of sailboats captioned "a calm day." Dorothy, who was about 12 at the time, is seen on board a small ship dressed in a straw hat and a sailor style dress. Fashionably dressed people are seen in the garden and posed on the steps of a summer cottage. They went to the Bradford fair where they had an indoor market and livestock in a field. It appears this album was kept by Dorothy Foster Phelps, born 1897, who lived in Hartford, Connecticut and later attended Brown University. An interesting collection of amateur photography compiled by a young New England girl.
