He studied three semesters at Otte Sköld s painting school, which was followed by a six-month stay in Paris where he studied with André Lhote. Schantz was a student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1952 to 1957, where he studied painting with Hugo Zuhr and graphic studies at the School of Graphic Arts. During the 1970s he became known for pictures of berries in large piles, as well as fruits and potatoes in old boxes and in enamel buckets.
