Softcover. Condizione: Fine. First English Edition; First Printing. Stiff unmarked book in crisp covers with flaps; about new.; 6.5 X 1.5 X 9.5 inches; 704 pages; The book traces Li Kunwu's life from his childhood in the early years of the People's Republic of China (founded 1949) , through the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution (where he worked as a propaganda artist) , the post-Mao reforms, economic opening under Deng Xiaoping, and into the rapid modernization of the 1990sâ"2000s. Style: Drawn in Li Kunwu's distinctive, expressive black-and-white ink style â" sometimes raw and documentary-like, sometimes lyrical â" with a mix of detailed realism and emotional caricature. The artwork powerfully conveys both the grandeur and the hardships of the era. Themes: Personal memory vs. Official history, the impact of political campaigns on ordinary people, survival and adaptation, the transformation of Chinese society, family life, ambition, disillusionment, and quiet pride. Unique aspect: Li Kunwu was an insider â" he created propaganda posters and illustrations during the Mao era â" so the book offers an intimate, unvarnished look at that world from someone who both participated in and later reflected critically on it. It's widely regarded as one of the most important graphic novels about 20th-century China, often compared to works like Maus or Persepolis for its blend of personal memoir and historical witness. Bross Edit. Condizione: Come Nuovo. …
