"A humorous ballad, the poem focuses on the fictional Mudville Nine, who are losing to their opponent, and their hopes for a victory rest on their star player, Casey. The poem depicts the last inning, with Mudville needing a home run to win. The first two batters fail, and while the next two surprisingly get on base, Casey, overconfident and arrogant, strikes out swinging, ending the game and the fans' hopes." Size: Octavo. Book.

"Casey at the Bat" was first published in The Daily Examiner in San Francisco on June 3, 1888. A month after the poem was published, it was reprinted as "Kelly at the Bat" in the New York Sporting Times.

The poem was wildly popular, somewhat to the author's surprise, and has ranked high in the baseball literary canon ever since.
