Presenting a handsome and rare early eighteenth-century engraved Bible picture book published in 1728 by the noted Hague printer Pierre de Hondt. This volume, titled Figures de la Bible, contains only the engraved plates, as issued in many deluxe copies, and includes two ornate noble dedication pages that are original to de Hondts production. Bound in full leather, this work represents a beautiful example of Dutch religious engraving and luxury bookmaking. Two elaborate noble dedication leaves are addressed to: Adam Adriaan van der Duyn and Philip Jacob van den Boetzelaer. The two ornate pages included in this volume are authentic components of de Hondts engraved Bible series. These leaves were printed to honor noble patrons and feature elaborate calligraphy, heraldic shields, and formal titles. Their presence indicates a higher end issue and adds significant historical interest. Pierre de Hondt, also known as Pieter de Hondt, was an influential Dutch printer, engraver, and bookseller active in The Hague during the early eighteenth century. He specialized in high quality religious works, Biblical atlases, engraved map books, and deluxe plate volumes. De Hondts works occupy an important place in Dutch printing history, blending artistic craftsmanship with devotional and scholarly content. Surviving plate only volumes, especially those retaining dedication leaves, are sought after by collectors of early religious art, Dutch engraving, and eighteenth-century bookmaking. This book was part of the Claiborne Pell library. Herbert Claiborne Pell bookplate affixed to front pastedown. Herbert Claiborne Pell was an American diplomat and public servant whose career included service as United States Minister to Portugal and later to Hungary. He was known for his interest in international cooperation and for his work with the United Nations War Crimes Commission during the final years of the Second World War. Pell came from a prominent Rhode Island family with long standing ties to public life, and his legacy continued through his son Claiborne Pell, who became a well-known United States Senator. This remarkable iconograph of the Bible in which Gérard Hoet and Bernard Picart mainly participated includes 214 full-page plates (29 double-page), the legend of which is written in Hebrew, English, German, Latin, French and Dutch. The two frontispieces are captioned in French, the rest of the text is written in Dutch. Each chapter ends with a beautiful engraved cul-de-lampe. This set of prints was first started by Picart in 1720 with the assistance of the Dutch painter Gérard Hoet, for what would undoubtedly become the pinnacle of the "Figures of the Bible". The Figures of the Bible are collections of engravings, which represent or signify Scripture through cycles of prints covering the entire Bible, a single Testament, or even a single biblical book. Pages fresh.The coronation of Queen Christina took place on October, 22 1650 and was quite a spectacle. Christina went to the castle of Jacobsdal where she entered a coronation carriage draped in black velvet embroidered in gold and pulled by three white horses. The procession to Storkyrkan was so long that when the first carriages arrived, the last ones had not yet left Jacobsdal (a distance of roughly 10.5-km or 6.5-mi). All four estates were invited to dine at the castle. Fountains at the market place splashed out wine for three days, roast was served, and illuminations sparkled, followed by a themed parade (The Illustrious Splendors of Felicity) .In 1654, Queen Christina of Sweden abdicated and moved to Rome, taking with her an immense coin collection of more than 15,000 coins, some of which she had inherited. She patronized a group of prominent numismatists of the time, and when she died, she bequethed more than 6000 coins to the Odescalchi family, and these coins were later sold to Pope Pius VI for the Vatican's coin cabinet.
