This book delves into the history of England, tracing its roots back to the mists of time with the legendary Brutus, a Trojan descendant who fled the ruins of his homeland after the Trojan War. Narrated by the author, a medieval chronicler, the book draws on a range of sources, including Geoffrey of Monmouth's "History of the Kings of Britain," to piece together a rich tapestry of events and characters that shaped the nation's destiny. The author skillfully weaves together historical figures and mythical beings, exploring themes of conquest, sovereignty, and the interplay between different cultures. Through the lens of medieval beliefs and customs, the book provides a fascinating glimpse into the origins of English identity and the enduring legacy of the past. This book offers a captivating and informative journey into the annals of England, revealing the intricate tapestry of its history and the profound impact of its legendary founding figures on the nation's identity. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This history of England in Anglo-Norman verse was extremely popular during the first half of the fourteenth century. Composed by Pierre de Langtoft (died c.1305), an English chronicler and Augustinian Canon, it was intended for the French-reading aristocracy. Part of the Rolls Series of publications of historical documents, the work was edited by Thomas Wright (1810-77), an antiquarian and historian with a special interest in Old English, Middle English and Anglo-Norman. Wright was also a member of many learned societies, including the Society of Antiquaries and the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres of Paris. This volume, published in 1868, begins with the coronation of Henry II and ends with the death of Edward I. Langtoft openly shares his virulently nationalistic and anti-Scottish views in the large part of the text devoted to the Scottish Wars of Independence.

The first volume, published in 1866, is mainly an abridgment of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae. It starts at the time when the legendary Brutus first colonised the island and covers the history of Saxon and Norman kings, up to the death of King Stephen in 1154.

2 volumes, royal 8vo; ex-library copy with usual markings, pages slightly browned, 3 hinges cracked, extremities and spines rubbed, small crack in one joint, tops of spines chipped away with some loss of title to vol. II, covers scuffed on vol. I, else good in contemporary quarter brown morocco gilt over black paper-covered boards or blue cloth. Pierre of Langtoft was most likely a canon of Bridlington, in Yorkshire, living during the reigns of Edwards I and II. His chronicle is divided into three parts: the first is an abridgement of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Britonum, from the time of the mythical Brutus up to the establishment of the Saxon dynasties; the second covers the history of the Anglo-Saxon and Norman kings down to Henry III, and is compiled from several sources; the third continues through the reign of Edward I, the most valuable part of the narrative. The author's purpose, at least in the third part, is to justify the Edward I's Scottish wars by detailing every abuse committed by Scots upon the English and every homage paid by Scottish rulers to English kings. In a corrupt French vernacular, derived from Anglo-Norman; a facing English translation is provided.
