Trade paperback. Condizione: Good. xxxi, [1], 143, [1] pages. Figures. Tables. Abbreviations and Acronyms. Appendix. References. Cover has some wear and soiling. Front cover corner creased. Bruce R. Pirnie (Ph. D., Modern History) is a Senior Analyst at Rand. Areas include modeling and special operations forces. Dr. Pirnie contributed to development of the Rand Strategy Assessment System, a global model of nuclear and conventional conflict that led to the current Rand Joint Integrated Contingencies Model. The purpose of this project was to assess requirements for peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief. RAND was tasked to provide a comprehensive analytic description of events associated with peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief. RAND was then tasked to produce a series of vignettes--generalized descriptions of the types of operations--based on operations contained in the Force Access database. RAND was further tasked to analyze the implications of these recurring operations, especially indications of stress on frequently tasked units of various types. RAND was then tasked to recommend changes in force structure and procedures that would improved the conduct of these types of smaller-scale contingencies without detracting from the nation's ability to wage major theater warfare, Such changes included modification to force mix and force structure across the components.

Prima edizione
Trade paperback. Condizione: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. xxxi, [1], 136 pages. Footnotes. Figures. Acronyms and Abbreviations. Terms used in this report. Standards for U.S. Involvement. Select Bibliography. As a power with global interests, the United States has a strong concern for successful peace operations. Seldom if ever will its interests be well served by failure, especially widely publicized and expensive failures that tend to discredit the United Nations. The purpose of this report was to assist U.S. decisionmakers by providing a checklist that can be used to plan a new operation or to evaluation an operation already in progress. Asserting that peace operations are too complex and too highly variable to follow a tidy set of guidelines, it offers issues to be resolved rather than guidelines to be followed. The issues are presented as a checklist organized around six headings covering the subject of peace operations: (1) amenability of the conflict to peace operations; (2) consent of parties bearing responsibility for the conflict; (3) mandate approved by the Security Council; (4) configuration of the peace force; (5) physical environment surrounding the operation; and (6) extent of international support for the operation. One broad issue is posed under each heading as a starting point for inquiry, then is divided into further issues forming the checklist. Each critical issue assumes different dimensions according to the type of operation that is being contemplated or is in progress.
