Hardcover. Black and white dj with color illustration, red boards with embossed design and gilt text on spine. IX, (1) 2-392 pp. features some bw and color illustrations. "Cornelis Ploos van Amstel was undoubtedly a creative person. His inquisitive and at the same time driving spirit was active in all kinds of areas and often led him to initiatives that were fruitful for many generations. Anyone who delves into his career will soon notice that he is dealing with a man of more than ordinary energy, ingenuity and organizational talent. Ploos was not one of those precocious creatures who entered the world at the age of 25. What he had to offer his environment - Amsterdam first, a much larger part of society later - grew in the years that he had to prove himself socially, and only came out when he knew himself to be a partner in a flourishing timber trade, and a happy marriage had also provided his domestic life with a solid foundation. Now Ploos' creative energy can unfold. He throws himself into etching and engraving, experiments with reproduction techniques, and in the meantime devotes himself to the re-establishment of the Amsterdam Drawing Academy. Once this became a fact and was given a new structure in 1765, Ploos became intensively involved in education and regularly gave lectures." - translated from beginning of the book.
