Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. VERY GOOD, no dust jacket as issued. Light wear on cover. Binding is tight and square. viii, 138 p. illus. 25 cm. . . . . . . . . FROM THE FOREWORD: Early in the fall of 1959, George B. Dowell, Executive Director of the Centennial, suggested a Vassar chronology as an appropriate project for the College's one hundredth year. The Central Committee for the Centennial approved, and two trial editions were circulated in mimeographed form to the faculty and administration and to many alumnae and friends of the College. It was decided, however, that for general publication, a different approach was desirable, and the manuscript was turned over to Constance Dimock Ellis, '38, for editing. Mrs. Ellis has skillfully selected highlights of Vassar for history and by the use of extensive quotations and additions to has given life and sparkle to the chronicle. The title chosen for the chronology, The Magnificent Enterprise, is an appropriate image for the college's centennial. The Founder's letters and diaries are full of references to "the enterprise." Mr. Vassar sometimes characterized it as the educational enterprise, the humble, the noble, the benevolent, the great and finally the magnificent enterprise. His phrase is being used not only for the title of this work but for other centennial that projects such as the traveling photographic exhibition.

Alice Morgan Wright and Ed Hudawalski (illustratore). This is the first book published by the Adirondack Forty-Sixers and number 344 of only 400 copies published. At the time of publication there were only 136 recorded Forty-Sixers. There are now over 17,000. The authors include the organization's founder Grace Hudowalski for whom Grace Peak in the Adirondacks is named and Adirondack icons Orra Phelps and Dorothy Plum. The end papers are the Romance Map of the High Peaks first published in 1942 in the Adirondack Mountain Club's High Spots from that year. There are also 23 glossy photographs. The book is a very early view of this organization just ten years after its founding. This copy belonged to Francis Rosevear who compiled Colvin in the Adirondacks. He inserted some small notes in light pencil in a few places, most notably in the list of peaks and elevations and the roster of finishers. I am calling it vg because the pencil notes and the lack of a dust-jacket. This copy includes 12 pages of updates to the roster in an attached envelope through finisher number 248 (1962). It was interesting to see in the introduction a reference to Heaven Uph'istedness which is the title of the fourth Forty-sixer book.
