Il libro sfida l'idea convenzionale del traduttore antico come semplice scriba meccanico, dimostrando la raffinatezza poetica della traduzione latina. L'Autore analizza come Germanico abbia riscritto i Phaenomena di Arato come un poema eziologico di età augustea, sovvertendo i temi religiosi e filosofici (stoici) dell'originale. Mentre l'opera di Arato presentava le costellazioni come segni della provvidenza divina, la versione di Germanico trasforma la mappa del cielo in un firmamento "ovidiano" fatto di amore, trasformazioni e drammi umani: nel testo di Germanico, non è più Zeus a controllare il cosmo, ma il poeta stesso che, come vates (vate), umanizza i corpi celesti attraverso il racconto mitologico.
