Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. A handsome 1962 Everyman's Library reprint of Volume Five of Edward Gibbon's monumental history, preserving the complete text rather than an abridgment. This volume encompasses Chapters XLVII-LII, carrying Gibbon's narrative through the great theological controversies of the Eastern Empire, iconoclasm, Charlemagne, Arabia and the rise of Mohammed, the Arab conquests, and the sieges of Constantinople. Gibbon's six-volume work occupies Everyman numbers 434-436 and 474-476; bibliographic records confirm that the Everyman edition originated in 1910. This copy's copyright leaf states "First published in Everyman's Library 1910 / Last reprinted 1962," making the edition identification unusually straightforward: 1962 Everyman's Library reprint, Volume Five, No. 475. The introduction is by noted historian of culture and religion Christopher Dawson. Bound in burgundy cloth with gilt spine lettering, gilt rules, and the Everyman EL device, with striking orange-and-white repeating EL monogram endpapers. The original magenta pictorial dust jacket is present, depicting "The Hegira." Of particular interest, the front flap explicitly credits "Wrapper drawing by Tom Poulton," while the rear flap carries copyright 1963, Wrapper design: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd. This means the jacket is a 1963 Dent wrapper paired with the 1962 printing. A comparable 1962 Everyman Volume III has surfaced with precisely this same phenomenon - a 1962 book in a 1963-dated Dent wrapper - strong evidence that these were publisher-supplied replacement/current-stock wrappers rather than later private marriages. Condition: Near Fine book / Very Good dust jacket. Burgundy cloth remains notably clean and square, gilt bright, binding firm, and the patterned endpapers vivid. Interior appears clean and unmarked with only mild age toning. The original jacket is complete and presents very well, with rubbing and scattered surface wear, small chips and abrasions along the folds and spine, and edge/corner wear, most pronounced at the spine ends and lower rear edge. The jacket is not price-clipped; its flap retains the Everyman Price Category designation. A very attractive surviving example of this mid-century Everyman issue. The little square symbol on the front flap is worth noting. Dent's flap explains that Everyman books were sold by color-coded price categories, with the fifth price represented by the lilac-shaded wrapper. This vivid magenta/lilac jacket is therefore not simply an arbitrary color choice - it belongs to Everyman's contemporary pricing/series system. Even better, the flap identifies the actual jacket illustrator, Tom Poulton, something booksellers often omit. The 1963 wrapper date on a 1962 book initially looks suspicious, but the existence of another 1962 Gibbon Everyman volume documented with a 1963 Poulton/Dent wrapper makes this an interesting piece of publisher practice rather than a defect. The volume itself also has a pleasing bibliographic place within the set: No. 475 is the middle volume of the second Everyman sequence, with Gibbon's six volumes numbered 434, 435, 436, 474, 475, and 476. Jacket illustration by Tom Poulton (illustratore).…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. A handsome mid-century Everyman's Library issue of Gibbon's monumental history, containing Chapters XXVI-XXXVIII and carrying the important introduction by British historian Christopher Dawson. The copyright page states "First published in Everyman's Library 1910 / Last reprinted 1962," so this is properly described as the 1962 Everyman's Library reprint, not a first edition. Bibliographic records confirm Volume III as Everyman's Library No. 436, one of the six numbers assigned to the complete set (434-436 and 474-476). This volume covers one of the most dramatic stretches of Gibbon's narrative: the Huns and Goths, Theodosius, the destruction of paganism, Alaric's invasions and sack of Rome, the Vandals, and the age of Attila. Bound in bright green cloth with gilt spine lettering and the gilt Everyman's Library "EL" device, with particularly attractive orange-and-white repeating EL-pattern endpapers and orange topstain. The original green pictorial jacket is present, its front depicting "A Barbarian." Especially noteworthy, the front flap explicitly credits "Wrapper drawing by Tom Poulton," while the rear flap dates the wrapper design itself © 1963, J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd. Thus the jacket appears to be a slightly later Dent wrapper placed around the 1962 printing - a perfectly plausible publisher pairing with a continuously reprinted Everyman title, and a bibliographically interesting detail. Later Everyman Gibbon jackets by Poulton are independently documented in the trade. Condition: Near Fine book / Very Good dust jacket. Green cloth remains unusually bright and clean, with strong gilt, square boards, firm binding, clean patterned endpapers, and a remarkably fresh interior. Orange topstain remains strong with only minor surface marks. No ownership inscriptions or substantive markings found. Jacket remains bright and complete, showing moderate rubbing and shelf wear along the extremities, shallow edge creasing, scattered small abrasions, and greater wear at the spine ends and corners; no major loss visible. An especially pleasing survival with the original illustrated wrapper. Thomas Leycester Poulton (1897-1963), known as Tom Poulton, was a British illustrator and artist whose public career was built on medical and commercial illustration, but whose legacy also includes a hidden body of erotic drawings discovered after his death. Poulton lost his father at age two. He attended Monkton Combe School near Bath and, in 1914, won a scholarship to the Slade School of Fine Art, where he studied under Henry Tonks. He married Edith Kibblewhite in 1923; she later became the celebrated lutenist Diana Poulton. While in Khajuraho, India during WWI, Poulton encountered the Kama Sutra, sparking a lifelong fascination with erotic art. Over decades, he produced hundreds of vibrant, commissioned drawings depicting uninhibited sexual activity, often for patrons like yachtsman Beecher Moore. These works were kept secret during his lifetime to avoid legal trouble, reflecting the conservative social norms of mid-20th-century Britain. After Poulton's death in 1963, his erotic archive was preserved and, in the 1990s-2000s, published in works such as The Secret Art of an English Gentleman.
