In all den Jahren haben unzählige Autoren ihre Strophen über diese Stadt geschrieben, sie in Lobsprüchen, Beschreibungen und Polemiken vergöttert, verehrt oder verspottet. Die Meinungen haben sich im Laufe der Zeit mehrfach gewandelt. Während die mittelalterlichen Spruchdichter nach Bildern suchten, um Bambcrgs Schönheit zu Lyrik zu verarbeiten, ließen die Aufklärer im 18. Jahrhundert ihrem Hohn über Bigotterie und Aberglauben freien Lauf. Im 19. Jahrhundert überwiegen wieder die Schwärmer, die wie Karl Immcr-mann in Bamberg die »Commode einer Großmama entdecken«. Das 20. bringt eine Melange aus allem und schildert die Einflüsse des Industriezeitaltcrs auf die Stadtgcsehichte. Die Meinungen pendeln zwischen den Extremen; alle bilden sich ein Urteil, nur nichtssagend hat sie noch keiner gefunden. So ist dieses Buch ein Kaleidoskop der unterschiedlichsten Eindrücke. Viele Schilderungen aus den vergangenen Jahrhunderten sind authentisch wie ehedem, denn in Bamberg ist noch erhalten, was in anderen Städten zahllose Schlachten, insbesondere die beiden Weltkriege zerstört haben. Bamberg, der Bisehofssitz ohne Festungsmauern und Stadtgraben, ist von derlei Unbill verschont gehlieben. Nicht zuletzt deshalb ist sie die Stadt mit der größten (zusammenhängenden) barocken Bausubstanz. In der Domstadt ist die Geschichte lebendig und allgegenwärtig. Starting with premises hav…ing to do with fictional names such as 'Holmes' or 'Emma', Stefano Predelli develops Radical Fictionalism, a theory that is subsequently applied to central themes in the analysis of fiction. Among other things, he discusses the distinction between storyworlds and narrative peripheries, the relationships between homodiegetic and heterodiegetic narrative, narrative time, unreliability, and closure. The final chapters extend Radical Fictionalism to critical discourse, as Predelli introduces the ideas of critical and biased retelling, and pauses on the relationships between Radical Fictionalism and talk about literary characters.
