Prima edizione
First edition (not stated but with matching dates upon title and copyright pages). xiv, 255 pages. Hardcover: H 20.75cm x L 13cm. Lacks dust jacket. Green cloth toned/foxed with some soiling; spine's gilt stamping remains fairly bright. Toning/foxing to text block edges; deckle fore-edge. Varied foxing throughout; five-line 1942 ink gift inscription to Kosciusko, Mississippi resident Lilly R. Brown from cousin Sidney Roebuck (likely Sidney T. Roebuck, 1901-1982, a Mississippi Highway Commissioner and state legislator) on front free endpaper; obtrusive toning to pages 132-133 caused by now removed newspaper clipping with diminishing carry-through to adjacent pages. Binding is firm. A good+ copy. The only lifetime compilation of Percy's poems selected from SAPPHO IN LEVKAS AND OTHER POEMS (1915), IN APRIL ONCE (1920), and ENZIO'S KINGDOM (1924). Heir to one of the great Mississippi planter fortunes, William Alexander Percy (1885-1942) is perhaps best known for his autobiographical LANTERNS ON THE LEVEE which is ripe with reminiscences of life in Greenville and the Mississippi Delta. However, Percy was also an accomplished poet, a graduate of Harvard Law School, a World War I veteran, and second cousin and adoptive father of novelist-essayist Walker Percy. Description copyright David Hallinan, Bookseller. {Poetry-Shelf#2}.
