Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Complete Set. Three volumes. Vol I, 1803-1812, Vol II, 1812-1820, Vol III, 1820-1829. With illustrations. 1970 reprints of the 1911 & 1912 volume set published by Longmans Green. Take a look at the photos. Commending this set is their superior condition. All three covers are very clean (one spot of a slight darkening on the cover of the 3rd volume: see 3rd photo). As you can see, the covers have only very minimal wear. Their gilt lettering is very bright. And the books are all extremely well-bound. No issues at all there. The pages are uniformly excellent. Maybe flawless. They are bright and clean. I don't see any soling or markings or creasing or writing/underlining. Beautiful set. For overseas shipping weight of the 3 volumes will require your selecting Priority Shipping.

Aggiungi al carrelloSee the entries for Dicksee and Lady Orchardson's husband Sir William Quiller Orchardson (1832-1910), RA, in the Oxford DNB. Lady Orchardson (1853-1917) was the daughter of the London publisher Charles Moxon. The Orchardsons married in 1873. Among their four children was the painter Charles Moxon Quiller Orchardson (1873-1917), who studied in the Royal Academy Schools and was killed in action during World War One. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Signed 'Frank Dicksee'. Begins: 'Dear Lady Orchardson - / I am so very sorry that I missed seeing you when you called on Sunday. I should have written sooner - but thought I would wait until after the Committee meeting [for the Royal Academy summer exhibtion] this afternoon'. He felt that committee would 'all desire to see the bust by Onslow Ford included in the Exhibition - & that I need hardly say is the case'. Nearly all the pictures have been 'sent in', and they will have 'a very fine show but we shall miss some we should dearly like to have'. The ODNB also has an entry for the sculptor Edward Onslow Ford (1852-1901), who participated in several Royal Academy summer exhibitions.

Aggiungi al carrelloSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. From the Piffard papers. Marshall's handwriting is hurried and in places difficult to decipher. 2pp, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once. Addressed to 'Dear Mr. Piffard' and signed 'John Marshall'. Piffard's gift of 'the Box of flowers, with [?]' leads him to opine: 'The Daffodils are lovely. - Why is Nature so beautiful? Can it be merely to please the Eye of Man? Surely not, for much of it, nay most of it would evolve itself, if man were to be exterminated tomorrow.' After expressing pleasure at Piffard's continuing good health, he discusses 'remarks about [Sponge?]' by the recipient, ending with the observation that the response of 'larynx & trachea & bronchi to the action of cold air, & East Wind, remains as an individual factor, "a personal equation" the [?] would say, which [strike?] faces'. He ends by explaining that he should have been in Dublin on that day, 'receiving the Honorary Fellowship of the Royl. Coll. of Surgeons in Ireland, - dining c. the Lord Lieutenant &c. &c.', but that he 'dare not risk the double journey'. In a postscript he adds that there is 'nothing of Epilepsy or other serious trouble in Mrs. Piffard's attacks. Irregularity of the Circulation, owing to temporary causes, will account for all.'.
