Während ein Weimarbuch nämlich den Blick stets auf das Ganze der Stadt richtet, ist die Thematik unseres Buches längst nicht so weit gespannt: vor allem das historische Stadtzentrum ? eben das alte Weimar ? soll dem Betrachter vor Augen geführt werden. Daß dieser Versuch nichts mit einer sentimentalen Reise in die Vergangenheit gemein hat, dafür aber um so mehr mit dem aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Interesse an der Erhaltung der historisch wertvollen Bausubstanz unserer Städte, mögen die Bilder selbst beweisen. Nur ein Wort sei hier dazu gesagt: alle Bilder, die in diesem Buche vereinigt sind, haben als festen Bezugspunkt die Gegenwart. So wurden zum Beispiel die Studien zur Baugeschichte des Marktes nicht um der Vergangenheit, sondern um der Gegenwart des Weimarer Marktplatzes willen entworfen, als in den fünfziger Jahren der Wiederaufbau des Marktes zum erstenmal zur Beratung stand. Und diesem Gegenwartsbezug trägt auch die Bildfolge Rechnung: stets sind die Architekturzeichnungen, die die Vergangenheit Weimars darstellen, in Beziehung zu den Skizzen gesetzt, die das alte Weimar in seiner Gegenwart, als Teil unseres Lebens heute vorstellen. Was dabei gezeigt wird, sind nicht in erster Linie einzelne historische Bauwerke oder gar die sogenannten malerischen Winkel der Altstadt. Die Stadt selbst in ihrer Räumlichkeit ist es, auf die der Blick des Betrachters gelenkt werden soll.
