Prevost Battersby, who wrote under the pen name 'Francis Prevost', was commissioned as lieutenant in the Royal Irish Rifles-however, he left to take up journalism, reporting on the Boer War and sports. The First World War changed spiritualism and popular writings on the occult. Often tinged with the profound grief of the loss from the war, spiritualist and occult writings shifted to reflect a growing need to be elsewhere and to connect with loved ones who had passed.
