Condizione: Befriedigend. 10 x 16.5 cm. LIX, 276 pages. Original hardcover. Very Good condition but with signs of external wear. From the library of George Wooley Gough, with his name to the pastedown (G.W.Gough). With annotations throughout. Presentation-copy blind-stamp to titlepage. Classical Series. Aristophanes (c. 446 c. 3…86 BC), son of Philippus, of the deme Kydathenaion (Latin: Cydathenaeum), was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his forty plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and are used to define it. Also known as "the Father of Comedy" and "the Prince of Ancient Comedy", Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. His powers of ridicule were feared and acknowledged by influential contemporaries; Plato singled out Aristophanes' play The Clouds as slander that contributed to the trial and subsequent condemning to death of Socrates, although other satirical playwrights had also caricatured the philosopher. Aristophanes' second play, The Babylonians (now lost), was denounced by the demagogue Cleon as a slander against the Athenian polis. It is possible that the case was argued in court, but details of the trial are not recorded and Aristophanes caricatured Cleon mercilessly in his subsequent plays, especially The Knights, the first of many plays that he directed himself. "In my opinion," he says through that play's Chorus, "the author-director of comedies has the hardest job of all." (Wikipedia).

Moderate to heavy discolouration and foxing to edges, front and rear pastedown enpapers and endpapers. Dustjacket top and spine frayed. Blue cloth an…d gold gilted hardcover. 'A.A.Buchanan' inscription on front endpaper; Alan Alexander Buchanan's personal copy. Alan Alexander Buchanan was an Anglican bishop in the second half of the 20th century. From the reference library of Hans Christian Andersen-Translator Erik Haugaard. Includes for example the following essays: The Revelation of God in Nature / The Divine Love and Anger / The Revelation of God in Christ / The Resurrection of the Body / The Revelation of God in Mankind / Psychology and Institutional Religion / Vocation to the Ministry etc. A collection of W.J. Sparrow Simpson's sermons, a personal exploration of God in nature, man and community life in Christianity. William John Sparrow Simpson was an English Anglican priest and writer. He wrote the libretto for John Stainer's oratorio The Crucifixion, several hymns, and more than fifty books. He was chaplain of Ilford Hospital Chapel from 1904 until his death. (Wikipedia) Alan Alexander Buchanan (28 February 1905 4 February 1984) was an Anglican bishop in the second half of the 20th century. Buchanan was born in Fintona. Educated at Masonic Boys School and Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated in history and political science in 1928. He was ordained in 1931. He served as a chaplain with military forces during the Second World War, notably parachuting into Arnhem in 1944 and being captured by the Germans. In the Airborne Museum at Oosterbeek there is a serviceman's prayer card displayed which is signed by Buchanan. He was with the Church of Ireland Mission in Belfast until 1937, after which he held incumbencies at St Cedma Inver and St Mary, Belfast and St Comgall, Bangor. He was Bishop of Clogher from 1958 to 1969, when he became Archbishop of Dublin and Primate of Ireland. He resigned in 1977 and died on 4 February 1984. Among other things, Buchanan was known as an advocate for women's ministry. In the early 1970s, he spoke to the Diocesan Synod of Dublin: "Is it right to limit the possibility of ordination to one half of the Church ? - Our House of Bishops has recently echoed the view of Lambeth that there is no theological reason against the ordination of women. The Church in Canada has already decided in favour.the Church of Ireland should at least declare its mind on the subject." He personally invited and trained the first five women to be commissioned Lay Readers in the Church of Ireland in 1975, including Daphne Wormell and Patricia Hastings-Hardy. When the group chose a maroon liturgical gown, which looks similar to the bishops' red, he told them, "If they like to think I am commissioning five lady bishops, let them think it!" His daughter, Desiree Stedman, was ordained in the Anglican Church of Canada. She was accepted into training in 1982 before the Church of Ireland voted to ordain women as deacons in 1984, and as priests and bishops in 1990. Buchanan missed these developments, having died in February 1984. (Wikipedia).

Son of a wealthy lawyer with extensive estates in Buckinghamshire, Waller first entered Parliament in 1624, although he played little part in the political struggles of the period prior to the First English Civil War in 1642. Unlike his relatives William and Hardress Waller, he was Royalist in sympathy and was accused in 1643 of organising a plot to seize London for Charles I. He allegedly escaped the death penalty by paying a large bribe, while several conspirators were executed, including his brother-in-law Nathaniel Tomkins. After his sentence was commuted to banishment, he lived in comfortable exile in France and Switzerland until allowed home in 1651 by Oliver Cromwell, a distant relative. He returned to Parliament after The Restoration in 1660 of Charles II; known as a fine and amusing orator, he held a number of minor offices. He largely retired from active politics after the death of his second wife in 1677, and died of edema in October 1687. Best remembered now for his poem "Song (Go, lovely rose)", Waller's earliest writing dates to the late 1630s, commemorating events that occurred in the 1620s, including a piece on Charles's escape from a shipwreck at Santander in 1625. Written in heroic couplets, it is one of the first examples of a form used by English poets for some two centuries; his verse was admired by John Dryden among others, while he was a close friend of Thomas Hobbes and John Evelyn. When he died, Waller was considered a major English poet, but his reputation declined over the next century, one view seeing him as a 'fairweather Royalist, an expedient Republican and mercenary bridegroom'. He is now regarded as a minor author, whose primary significance was to develop a form adapted and improved by later poets like Alexander Pope. Edmund Waller was born on 3 March 1606 at Stocks Place, Coleshill, Buckinghamshire, eldest son of Robert Waller (15601616) and Anne Hampden (15891658). He came from a family of 15, many of whom survived to adulthood, including Elizabeth (1601?), Anne (16021642), Cecilia (1603?), Robert (16061641), Mary (16081660), Ursula (16101692) and John (16161667). Cecilia married Nathaniel Tomkins, executed for his part in the 1643 plot, while Mary married Adrian Scrope, executed in 1660 as a regicide. In addition, Waller was related to several prominent Parliamentarians; through his mother, he was distantly connected to Oliver Cromwell, while he and John Hampden were grandchildren of Griffith Hampden (15431591). On his father's side, he was related to the Parliamentarian generals Sir Hardress and Sir William Waller. In 1631, he married Anne Banks, orphaned heiress of a wealthy merchant; contracted in defiance of the Privy Council of England, the marriage was eventually approved by Charles I. Anne died in childbirth in 1634, leaving two children, Robert (16331652?) and Elizabeth (16341683). In 1644, he re-married, this time to Mary Bracey (died 1677) and they had numerous children; since their eldest son Benjamin was mentally disabled, he was succeeded by Edmund (16521700), MP for Amersham from 1689 to 1698. His youngest son Stephen (16761708) was one of the Commissioners who negotiated the 1707 Treaty of Union. On his death, his estate was valued at the then considerable sum of £40,000; he left legacies to his children Margaret (16481690), who acted as his secretary and Benjamin's guardian, Mary, Elizabeth, Anne, Cicely, Octavia, Dorothy and William. The publication gives a narrative account of his role as the British forces attempted to quash a rebellion by the Wavuma tribe. Sir James Ronald Leslie Macdonald KCSI KCIE CB DL (1862 1927) was a Indian born, Scottish engineer, explorer and cartographer. He served as a British Army engineer, rose to the rank of Brigadier-General and was knighted in1900. After the period covered by this book, MacDonald was involved in some of major British imperial expeditions. In what became known as the Fashoda Incident, MacDonald helped secure the southern region of Sudan around the White Nile Basin for the British in 1898, he then served in the Second Anglo-Boer War in South Africa, took part in the international expedition against the Boxers in China and led the military force attached to an official expedition into Tibet in 19031904.
