From the library of George Wooley Gough, with his name to the pastedown (G.W.Gough). With annotations throughout. Presentation-copy blind-stamp to titlepage. Classical Series. Aristophanes (c. 446 c. 3…86 BC), son of Philippus, of the deme Kydathenaion (Latin: Cydathenaeum), was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his forty plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and are used to define it. Also known as "the Father of Comedy" and "the Prince of Ancient Comedy", Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. His powers of ridicule were feared and acknowledged by influential contemporaries; Plato singled out Aristophanes' play The Clouds as slander that contributed to the trial and subsequent condemning to death of Socrates, although other satirical playwrights had also caricatured the philosopher. Aristophanes' second play, The Babylonians (now lost), was denounced by the demagogue Cleon as a slander against the Athenian polis. It is possible that the case was argued in court, but details of the trial are not recorded and Aristophanes caricatured Cleon mercilessly in his subsequent plays, especially The Knights, the first of many plays that he directed himself. "In my opinion," he says through that play's Chorus, "the author-director of comedies has the hardest job of all." (Wikipedia).

Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Moderate to heavy discolouration and foxing to edges, front and rear pastedown enpapers and endpapers. Dustjacket top and spine frayed. Blue cloth an…d gold gilted hardcover. 'A.A.Buchanan' inscription on front endpaper; Alan Alexander Buchanan's personal copy. Alan Alexander Buchanan was an Anglican bishop in the second half of the 20th century. From the reference library of Hans Christian Andersen-Translator Erik Haugaard. Includes for example the following essays: The Revelation of God in Nature / The Divine Love and Anger / The Revelation of God in Christ / The Resurrection of the Body / The Revelation of God in Mankind / Psychology and Institutional Religion / Vocation to the Ministry etc. A collection of W.J. Sparrow Simpson's sermons, a personal exploration of God in nature, man and community life in Christianity. William John Sparrow Simpson was an English Anglican priest and writer. He wrote the libretto for John Stainer's oratorio The Crucifixion, several hymns, and more than fifty books. He was chaplain of Ilford Hospital Chapel from 1904 until his death. (Wikipedia) Alan Alexander Buchanan (28 February 1905 4 February 1984) was an Anglican bishop in the second half of the 20th century. Buchanan was born in Fintona. Educated at Masonic Boys School and Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated in history and political science in 1928. He was ordained in 1931. He served as a chaplain with military forces during the Second World War, notably parachuting into Arnhem in 1944 and being captured by the Germans. In the Airborne Museum at Oosterbeek there is a serviceman's prayer card displayed which is signed by Buchanan. He was with the Church of Ireland Mission in Belfast until 1937, after which he held incumbencies at St Cedma Inver and St Mary, Belfast and St Comgall, Bangor. He was Bishop of Clogher from 1958 to 1969, when he became Archbishop of Dublin and Primate of Ireland. He resigned in 1977 and died on 4 February 1984. Among other things, Buchanan was known as an advocate for women's ministry. In the early 1970s, he spoke to the Diocesan Synod of Dublin: "Is it right to limit the possibility of ordination to one half of the Church ? - Our House of Bishops has recently echoed the view of Lambeth that there is no theological reason against the ordination of women. The Church in Canada has already decided in favour.the Church of Ireland should at least declare its mind on the subject." He personally invited and trained the first five women to be commissioned Lay Readers in the Church of Ireland in 1975, including Daphne Wormell and Patricia Hastings-Hardy. When the group chose a maroon liturgical gown, which looks similar to the bishops' red, he told them, "If they like to think I am commissioning five lady bishops, let them think it!" His daughter, Desiree Stedman, was ordained in the Anglican Church of Canada. She was accepted into training in 1982 before the Church of Ireland voted to ordain women as deacons in 1984, and as priests and bishops in 1990. Buchanan missed these developments, having died in February 1984. (Wikipedia).

Condizione: Sehr gut. First Edition. 21cm x 14.5cm. (8) 179 (4) pages. Fine copy in publisher's half cloth-covered boards and in near fine dust jacket. In protective Mylar. Very good + condition with only minor signs of wear. Inscribed by Robert Coles on front free endpaper to Francine (du Plessix Gray) in September 1971: "For F…rancine.Bob". These conversations, and the events surrounding them in the summer of 1970, describe a geography of faith whose landscape included open defiance of the government, a varied response from the psychiatric community, recourse to prayer and solitude, and, finally, nationwide attention that has heightened the meaning of nonviolent resistance in America. Underground from April to August, Father Daniel Berrigan refused to report to Federal authorities to begin imprisonment for his antiwar action at Catonsville, Maryland. Meanwhile, Daniel's brother Philip had been arrested and imprisoned in Lewisburg. In July he began a fast to protest prison harassment and the news provoked a reaction in many people, notable Dr. Robert Coles. Operating on both fronts, Coles visited Philip Berrigan in prison, then later met with Daniel Berrigan, still underground, to open a discussion on a variety of shared concerns. What is health anyway? What is the future of the nuclear family? How can the movement be 'a school of alternatives"? What are the responsibilities of the professionals? In general, how do a Jesuit priest and a child psychiatrist, in similar or dissimilar ways, deal with the demands placed upon human development in a time of war and national protest? This book, an edited transcript of the Berrigan-Coles conversations, deals with these and other questions. It also includes a remarkable, long introduction by Coles on the meaning of his own work and the example which Daniel Berrigan has tried to set. (Source: Pinterest) _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Marie Bashkirtseff, born Maria Konstantinovna Bashkirtseva (24 November [O.S. 12 November] 1858 31 October 1884), was an émigré artist who was born into a noble family on their estate near the city of Poltava. She lived and worked in Paris, and died at the age of 25. From approximately the age of 13, Bashkirtseff kept a journal, and it is probably for this that she is most famous today. It has been called "a strikingly modern psychological self-portrait of a young, gifted mind", and her urgent prose, which occasionally breaks out into dialogue, remains extremely readable. She was multilingual and despite her self-involvement, was a keen observer with an acute ear for hypocrisy, so that her journal also offers a near-novelistic account of the late nineteenth century European bourgeoisie. A consistent theme throughout her journal is her deep desire to achieve fame, inflected by her increasing fear that her intermittent illnesses might turn out to be tuberculosis. In a prefatory section written toward the end of her life, in which she recounts her family history, she writes, "If I do not die young I hope to live as great artist; but if I die young, I intend to have my journal, which cannot fail to be interesting, published." Similarly: "When I am dead, my life, which appears to me a remarkable one, will be read. (The only thing wanting is that it should have been different)." In effect, the first half of Bashkirtseff's journal is a coming-of-age story while the second is an account of heroic suffering. (Wikipedia).

Mai 1828 in Berlin; 20. November 1826 in Berlin.
