Détruite par Hammurabi en 1759 av. J.-C., puis redécouverte par l'archéologue et futur directeur du Louvre André Parrot, lors de l'hiver 1933-1934, et enfin prise dans la tourmente du conflit syrien depuis 2011, la cité de Mari revêt une importante archéologie exceptionnelle de par les témoignages du passé qu'elle a livréspour l…e IIIe et le début du IIe millénaires av. J.-C. Cet ouvrage porte sur une période précise de son histoire discontinue, marquée par de véritables temps de constructions et de destructions, la période des Sakkanakkus, qui voit l'émergence d'une nouvelle phase de la cité ("Ville III"). Après sa destruction par les rois d'Akkad, Mari renaît sous l'égide de ces gouverneurs qui régnèrent sur l'antique cité d'environ 2300 à 1820/1810 av. J.-C. Sur base d'une sélection précieuse d'objets - images d'archives, briques inscrites en argile, statuettes de pierre, relevés de peintures, céramiques, etc. - issus des collections de six institutions et relevant de neuf décennies de recherches, une dizaine de chercheurs explorent les temples de la cité tels que le "Temple aux lions" ou le temple de Ninhursag, l'architecture du Grand palais royal et ses peintures murales, et mettent ainsi en lumière une riche production artistique dont témoigne le célèbre "Lion de Mari".
