C'est d'ailleurs dans la rue Jacques-Cartier a Dinard, pres de Saint-Malo, a I'embouchure de la Ranee, que Raymond Mains passe ses vacances dans la maison de son grand-pere. Cartier, c'est aussi la photographie, avec Henri Cartier-Bresson ou Cartier-BrassaT, Man Ray, Emmanuel Sougez. La ville, la rue, les affiches dechirees, les graffiti photographies par Brassai qui nous renvoient aux photographies du chantier du Grand Louvre faites par Raymond Mains, dans lesquelles on peut lire et voir toute une histoire de la sculpture moderne. Clisson, petite ville pres de Nantes, ou le sculp- teur Lemot, auteur de la statue equestre d'Henri IV, transforme la vallee de la Sevre en Tivoli-sur-Sevre. Nantes, la ville de Jules Verne et des Petit Beurre LU que grignotait Raymond Mains en lisant Raymond Lulle. L'imprevu arrive toujours de toute facon. Nous sommes a la merci des evenements. C'est la realite des faits. L'homme aux palissades et aux lapalissades, photographe, ravisseur d'images et de lan-gage, invente une langue nouvelle. Une nouvelle facon de voir. La langue des calembours visuels, la langue de la machine a voyager dans le temps et I'espace. Les associations qu'elle opere pour des raisons de rapports d'images ou phonetiques font des per-cees dans le temps. Elle relie des dates, des evenements, des cou-leurs, des personnes, des lieux. Elle ajoute du sens a I'accident, parce que tout ce qui existe est situe. Raymond Mains, regardeur conceptuel, s'approprie le monde avec la photographie et le lan-gage. II s'oppose au temps qui passe. II s'oppose a la melancolie. II invente un temps a rebonds. Une memoire qui se deploie dans tous les temps et dans les espaces. II pense que nous sommes lances de maniere irremediable dans ces recherches (at home), que rien ne pourra arreter le fait que I'art a vaincu. II s'apercoit qu'il y a des evenements, des rapprochements que I'on n'avait pas imagines, et que, I'art etant devenu conceptuel, il doit se lancer dans ces etudes. His art, collage paintings created by bringing together layers of colorful posters, objects, graffiti and other materials collected from cities all over the world, communicates messages about contemporary life while also being studies in texture, shadow, color, and light. Pulling materials from his many travels over his lifetime, a poster from Sartre's play Huis Clos found in Paris in the 1950s, to fragments of graffiti from New York's Soho neighborhood, Dogancay's urban walls express the many moods of that moment in time and are an integral part of a cultural dialogue that occurred both in America and in post- War Europe as conditions arose that gave a new vigor to the art of collage and decollage, or ungluing of paper.
