Original Wrappers. Condizione: Fine binding. First Edition. Accordion. 8" x 5," closed. [16] pp., illus. Limited edition, numbered 5 of 9 variants. Signed by Goodale and Scanga at the colophon. An innovative structure, this accordion book made up of intaglio prints with hand-coloring in silver ink is sewn into the illustrated wrappers in two places. Variants numbered 1-5 comprise the deluxe edition in full cloth, lidded box with striking print recessed into the lid. Copies 6-9 are without box?inquire for pricing. Intaglio-printed prospectus with hand-coloring is laid in. A beautiful and moody collaboration between Goodale and Scanga; their fourth. This book is a product of their individual memories of and reflections upon the solar eclipse in April 2024, Goodale watching from the beach in Maine and Scanga from the woods. These sixteen interlocking pages expand from a paper cover bringing the reader into a surreal garden of dwindling light. Not attempting to be a strict representation of their experiences witnessing the totality, it is instead a wonderful blend of memory and fantasy relaying the remembered emotion. A striking scene in blues and shadows accented in silver ink applied by hand. While the edition was printed from the same plates, the hand-coloring and even the variation in color and saturation from copy to copy mean no two are exactly alike. The structure of the binding and the manner in which these leaves connect offer a more complicated experience than a typical accordion book, with some pages interlocking mid-leaf there is something always just out of view contributing to the mystery and wonder.

Hard Cover. Condizione: Fine binding. 15-1/2" x 9-5/8." 22 pp., illus. Limited edition, number 10 of 15 copies. Signed by Goodale at the title page. Accordion-bound with front pastedown attached inside case of olive green cloth over boards with silkscreened upper cover. Final pastedown attached to a free, cloth-covered board so the accordion can fully expand outside of the case. The book comprises 17 hand-colored, silkscreen prints, 2 pages of letterpress printed descriptions (Latin and common names of the plants as well as date and place of original drawing and sighting) and 2-page poem by Goodale. This is one from a series by Goodale, Threatened and Endangered, documenting and memorializing every threatened and endangered plant and animal species in her home state of Maine. Research for that project brought Goodale into intimate contact with Kate Furbish, a woman of an earlier time who also passionately recorded Maine's natural bounty. Furbish's portfolios that inspired this project are located at the Hawthorne-Longfellow Library, Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine. A beautiful collection of drawings accompanying Goodale's poem, all of which speak to some of what we are on the cusp of losing.

Hard Cover. Condizione: Fine binding. 8-14" x 12-1/4." 8 page-spreads. Limited edition, number 4 of 5 copies. Signed by Goodale at the colophon. Accordion-bound in case with scarlet velvet over boards and backed in cloth. Cover stamped in gilt with a fleur-de-lis; final leaf attached to a matching velvet-covered board so the accordion can fully expand outside of the case. All housed in drop-spine box with magnetic closures; the same cloths are used on the box as for the book, the lid of which bears a repeating pattern of fleur-de-lis in gilt. Prospectus and Goodale's English translation of her French poem are laid in. A tribute to the artist's friend, Patty Olds (1955-2020), Goodale reflects on a journey the she and Olds took in 1993. While they took a train from Versailles instead of the half day walk, Goodale reimagines this journey but on foot and in the final years of the 18th century when the Royal Menagerie of Versailles was coming to an end during the French Revolution. In 1794 a woman rallied to save the last few animals, walking them to the Jardin des Plantes in Paris where these exotic creatures became the beginning of the first public zoo in Paris, and it is this walk, with these animals that Goodale depicts in this wonderful artist's book. Goodale's poem in French is foil stamped across her illustrations: a block print and a series of drypoints, à la poupée and chine collé. A beautiful, captivating story that can unfold a page at a time, or spread out, displaying the whole delightful caravan.

Hard Cover. Condizione: Fine binding. 5-3/4" x 6-3/4." 18 pp. (including pastedowns), illus. Limited edition, number 3 of 9 copies. Signed by Goodale and Merrill. Vertically oriented accordion binding with gray cloth over boards and title stamped in silver on the upper cover; all housed in clamshell with a drypoint etching recessed into the lid of the box. Merrill has penned a beautiful poem that plumbs deep into the relentless nature of human striving for understanding, for purpose, and for hope and wonder. Just as Merrill's poem pulls, hand-over-hand, that rope of emotion out of the sea, Goodale's drypoint etchings drive us back into the sea, each page of gray paper, washed darker as she takes us deeper and deeper, with different creatures and sea life as we go. And through it all, Merrill's rope to the ocean floor is suggested in the illustrations.

Hard Cover. Condizione: Fine binding. 13-3/4" x 12-1/2" x 3-1/2." 24 pp., illus. Limited edition, number 5 of 5 copies. Signed by Goodale at the colophon. An interesting structure, with cloth covered boards opening in alternating direction forming an elaborate compound dos-à-dos binding with 12 openings. Each opening presents its own form of display: from codex to according, from fold-out to pop up. Hand-colored silkscreen prints with patterned pastepaper. Text is letterpress printed by Scott Vile at Ascensius Press. All housed in a drop-spine box with magnetic closure. Of this project, Goodale writes: "This is a book I [had] been working on since 2010. In its 11 chapters it conjures up memories of white animals (and plants). Although this book is not specifically about flora and fauna protected by the Endangered Species Act, the book brings to mind how human impact has created islands of territory that limit DNA pools and lead to such anomalies as albinism, leucism, melanism, and piebald. In fact, two piebald white tail deer in our neighborhood were the start of my poetic remembrance in chapter 5. So, although there isn't a specifically labeled threatened or endangered species in this collection, I feel I am still working from the same point of view with this volume." Like so many of Goodale's books, this engaging structure prompts exploration: at every turned page a viewer must "discover" how the material is to be opened or displayed; that discovery and exploration is invariably rewarded by surprise and wonder. The book can be stood up and many of the page-spreads can be opened for display.

Condizione: Near Fine binding. 9" x 9" x 2-3/4." Limited editions, each number 4 of 10. Signed by Goodale. Fifteen Maine Grasses is in a compound binding, both codices and accordion with mixed media prints. Boards are covered in Japanese grass paper with a braided raffia tie for closure. This is remarkably tactile and its binding speaks to the subject matter, as all these bindings do. Five Maine Rushes is an according binding with ink on paper and cut-outs. The boards are covered in cloth and woven Japanese grass paper, with patterned pastepaper endsheets. The cut-outs offer a fleeting sense of the threatened and endangered grasses depicted and described. And the very pale ink on white paper reinforces this sense of ephemerality. Cyperaceae comprises hand colored gelatin prints in an accordion binding with boards covered in papyrus and a braided raffia tie at the spine securing the boards but allowing sufficient flexibility to leaf through the accordion binding or display it in a variety of ways. Members of this family of monocot flowering plants illustrated in this book are threatened or endangered in Maine. Originally, these three were issued separately between 2002 and 2005, but given the relationship of between the subjects a few were sequestered by the artist and presented together in a cloth-covered box with tiered stair to account for the varying widths of the books. All share the same height. Poignantly presented work from Goodale's Threatened and Endangered series, which presents the threatened and endangered flora and fauna of Maine.

5-1/2" x 5-1/2" x 3." Limited edition, number 5 of 5 copies. Paper ribbon of MacGregor handmade papers. Paste papers, hand coloring, and silkscreen prints. In cloth-backed clamshell box with pastepaper covers. Title hand painted on lid in Latin. Title, number, edition, year, and signature on pastepaper lining lid interior. The delicate lily pads and two blooms are attached to paper ribbons anchored to bottom of the box. A remarkable and interactive creation from Goodale's Threatened and Endangered series, which presents the threatened and endangered flora and fauna of Maine. In Maine the small water lily is considered to be in the threatened status. Her presentation of material in this series is varied and wonderful. Pygmy Water Lily is particularly engaging with this array of fronds that demand attention in the unfurling; a remarkable way to focus the viewer on each lily pad and flower.
