Soft cover. Condizione: Good. Attractive and increasingly scarce 1901 'Vocal Gems' selection from Maid Marian, the comic opera by lyricist Harry B. Smith and composer Reginald de Koven, performed by the famous Bostonians. Includes selections such as 'Sheriff's Song,' 'The Dew is on the Heather,' 'Never in the Wide, Wide World,' 'Song of the Crusader,' 'Annabel Was Fairest,' 'The Cobbler and the Flies,' and 'Madrigal.' Engraved vocal score with piano accompaniment. Decorative Art Nouveau-influenced cover in teal and cream with period illustration. A desirable Edwardian-era American operetta item. Condition (Good / Good+ overall): Wrappers present and complete; moderate edge wear and chipping, including loss at lower front corner and small chips at spine ends. Age toning to covers with some staining and surface wear. Rear cover shows discoloration and a circular ring mark. Interior generally clean and legible with light toning and occasional corner creasing; no significant tears affecting music. Binding intact though fragile at spine fold, typical of early 20th-century sheet music. Copyright page reads 'Copyright, 1901, by Edward Schuberth & Co.' Price printed 'Pr. 50¢ Net.' No later printing indicators present. Publisher imprint lists New York (23 Union Square), London, and Leipzig addresses. This conforms to the original 1901 issue rather than later reprints. Harry B. Smith (1860-1936) was one of America's most prolific librettists and lyricists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, credited with writing hundreds of operettas, musical comedies, and libretti. He collaborated with major composers and helped shape American light opera before Broadway's golden age. Reginald de Koven (1859-1920) was an American composer and critic best known for popularizing comic opera in the United States. His works, including Robin Hood and Maid Marian, were staples of touring companies such as The Bostonians and helped establish a distinctly American operetta tradition.

He was an integral part of the Cornish Arts Colony. in New Hampshire, which coalesced around the sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens at the turn of the century. Other 'names' who spent time. there include dancer Isadora Duncan, actresses Ethel Barrymore and Marie. Dressler, even the editor Max Perkins.
