Two lists of subscribers, 100 finely hand-coloured engraved plates by Gottlieb Friedrich Abel, many heightened with gum arabic. Three-quarter brown crushed morocco, cloth boards, spine gilt. A superb work on dendrology, illustrated with lovely hand coloured engraved plates. The present work contains 100 detailed engravings of different German trees, along with text which provides a key to each of the plates, while each plate is titled along the bottom margin with their Latin binomial and the common name in German. The plates, engraved by Gottlieb Friedrich Abel (b.1763), are superb life-like representations of leaves, fruit and flowers of forest trees. The accuracy and details of the illustrations means that the plants depicted are not only beautiful but also scientifically accurate, making them an important contribution to the field of botany. Reitter was born on May 15, 1759, in the town of Leonberg in the Duchy of Württemberg. He came from a family of foresters and naturalists, and his father and grandfather both served as head foresters for the Duke of Württemberg. In 1776, Reitter began working as a forester in the town of Gomadingen. Throughout his career, Reitter was known for his expertise in the fields of forestry and natural history. Today, he is remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of German forestry and natural history, and his contributions to these fields continue to be studied and celebrated. Gottlieb Friedrich Abel was a German engraver best known for his work as an illustrator and engraver of natural history subjects, particularly birds and insects. He collaborated with many leading naturalists of his time to create illustrations for their scientific publications. Abel's illustrations were highly regarded for their accuracy and attention to detail, and he was known for his skill in capturing the unique characteristics of different species.
