Edition originale (l'opuscule sera réédité en 1891 avec un nouveau titre, Origines de l'imprimerie en France). Les débuts de la typographie et l'histoire de sa Provence natale fure…nt les deux seules passions de cet étrange prêtre que fut l'abbé Requin (1851-1917), très vite déchargé de toute cura animarum pour pouvoir se consacrer à ses recherches érudites. Et c'est en dépouillant les archives notariales d'Avignon dans un tout autre dessein, qu'il mit au jour des passages de 1444-1446 relatifs à un "ars scribendi artificialiter" qui furent interprétés comme de tout premiers essais typographiques, devançant Mayence et Strasbourg. Une vive discussion s'ensuivit, mais les spécialistes sont par la suite demeurés sceptiques sur la réalité concrète d'un véritable matériel typographique mobile à cette date, préférant interpréter les textes relevés par Requin comme se référant à une technique développée d'estampillage, et non d'imprimerie à proprement parler.
