Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Very Good. HAWKINS, REV. JOEL ELLIS (1837-1918). A Commonplace-Book: Designed to Assist Students, Professional Men, and General Readers in Treasuring Up Knowledge for Future Use. New York: Carlton & Porter, 1860. 4to, black leather spine with brown cloth boards, 401 ruled pp., two penned notations on front pastedown and rear blank of an original or early price ($1.35 and $1.45); filled with manuscript entries (nearly all in ink). Front flyleaf has signature and date of the owner: "J.E. Hawkins / Dec. 3d 1860." Inserted are 6 pp. of notes about George Peck's The Scripture Doctrine of Christian Perfection, written in the same hand.----- Based on the contents of the manuscript it is assumed that the J. E. Hawkins who penned this work was the minister with the same initials (named Joel E. Hawkins) who served in parishes in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and possibly Connecticut. Hawkins was born in Wrentham, Massachusetts in 1837 and is known to have served in East Greenwich & Woonsocket, RI; and Brockton, MA.----- The entries appear to be from about 1860 to late 1870. Topics are widely varied and likely exceed 1,000. Examples include: Jealousy, Youth and Beauty of Flowers, Splendid Misery, Power of a Holy Life, the Tripod, Skepticism, Spiritualism, Oriental Women, Solitude, Old Age, Integrity, etc., etc. One notation near the end of this manuscript (on p. 373 of 401 and dated 1870) refers to a fire at the New Bedford Flour Mills (September 13, 1870). Hawkins' entries include quotes from Henry Ward Beecher, Sir Isaac Walton, St. Augustine, Rene Descartes, William Cowper, Mrs. Lincoln, Martin Luther, and many others. His personal entries appear to be thoughts to include in his sermons and homilies.----- First Entry: "I have here only made a nosegay of culled flowers & have brought nothing of my own but the string that ties them." (Montaigne) Last Page: "Many things contained in this book have been hastily recorded and in a crude state, simply suggestive for my own benefit.".…
