Paperback. Condizione: New. Language: English. About the Book:- Buddhism Its History and literature book. It is a compilation of the first six lectures delivered on Buddhism by Prof. T. W. Rhys Davids during the winter of 1894 - 1895 in Universities of Boston, New York, Brooklyn, Baltimore, Columbia, and Philadelphia. It contain…s lectures on religious theories in India before Buddhism, The literature behind the knowledge of Buddhism, Notes on Buddha's life, and the history and secrets of Buddhism. It was strange, and very characteristic of the real meaning of true Buddhism, that there was no life of Gautama the Buddha in the Buddhist scriptures. Buddhism should not be treated as a religion such as is understood by those who regard religion as consisting of certain beliefs and ideas concerning the soul and its destiny and of the various deities who are supposed to help or hinder human beings in the attainment of the ultimate goal. About the Author:-Thomas William Rhys Davids FBA (1843 1922) was an English scholar of the Pali language and founder of the P?li Text Society. He took an active part in founding the British Academy and London School for Oriental Studies. In 1863 Rhys Davids returned to Britain, and on passing his civil service exams was posted to Sri Lanka (then known as Ceylon). When he was Magistrate of Galle and a case was brought before him involving questions of ecclesiastical law, he first learned of the P?li language when a document in that language was brought in as evidence. In 1871 he was posted as Assistant Government Agent of Nuwarakalaviya, where Anuradhapura was the administrative centre. The governor was Sir Hercules Robinson, who had founded the Archaeological Commission in 1868. The Title 'Buddhism: Its History and Literature written/authored/edited by T . W . Rhys Da Vids', published in the year 2021. The ISBN 9788121221948 is assigned to the Paperback version of this title. This book has total of pp. 248 (Pages). Paperback. Condizione: New. Language: English. Abut the book:-This volume contain book IV & V. The story of a discussion between Nagasena and Millinda is no doubt, if the arguments in the Introduction to part I are of any avail, an historical romance with an ethical tendency. In constant repetition after it had become popular. A…t present it can only be said that we have a very pretty puzzle propounded to us a puzzle much more difficult to solve than those which king Milinda put to Nagasena the sage. If the shorter version (or rather paraphrase, for it does not seem to be a version at all in our modern sense) that from the Korea be really the original how comes it that the other Chinese book, included in a collection made two centuries later should happen to differ from it in the precise parts in which it the supposed original differs from pali. About the Author:-Friedrich Max Müller (1823 1900) was a German-born philologist and Orientalist, who lived and studied in Britain for most of his life. He was one of the founders of the western academic disciplines of Indian studies and religious studies ('science of religion', German: Religionswissenschaft). Müller wrote both scholarly and popular works on the subject of Indology. The Sacred Books of the East, a 50-volume set of English translations, was prepared under his direction. Thomas William Rhys Davids (1843 1922) was an English scholar of the Pali language and founder of the Pali Text Society. He took an active part in founding the British Academy and London School for Oriental Studies. He was born at Colchester in Essex, England, the eldest son of a Congregational clergyman from Wales, who was affectionately referred to as the Bishop of Essex. His mother, who died at the age of 37 following childbirth, had run the Sunday school at his father's church. In 1894 Rhys Davids married Caroline Augusta Foley, a noted P?li scholar. Unlike his wife, however, Rhys Davids was a critic and opponent of Theosophy. They had three children. In 1871 he was posted as Assistant Government Agent of Nuwarakalaviya, where Anuradhapura was the administrative centre. The governor was Sir Hercules Robinson, who had founded the Archaeological Commission in 1868. Paperback. Condizione: New. Language: English. About the Book:-The work of which a translation is here for the first time presented to the English reading public, has had a strange and interesting history. Written in Northern India, at or a little after the beginning of the Christian era, and either in Sanskrit itself or in some… North Indian Prakrit, it has been entirely lost in the land of its origin and (so far as is at present known) is not extant in any of the homes of the various sects and schools of the Buddhists except only in Ceylon and in those countries which have derived their Buddhism from Ceylon. It is true that General Cunningham says that the name of Milinda is still famous in all Buddhist countries.' But he is here drawing a very wide conclusion from an isolated fact.
