Hardcover. 125, [1] p.; 18.5 cm. (A treasury of Christian books) [The original 8 chapters condensed into 3 with subsections] `While there are in his writings many passages of splendid prose, Baxter scorned to polish and ornament what he wrote, and in his haste, to tell the truth, was often clumsy. From these faults The Reformed Pastor is by no means free. Yet, for all that, Baxter `speaks things', as Carlyle said of Cromwell, and few can match him for forcefulness. But though some editing of Baxter is inevitable for any modern republication I had not realized to what an extent editors have in fact interfered with The Reformed Pastor by drastic rearrangement and `bowdlerizing' until, in preparing this edition, I was able by the courtesy of Dr Williams' Library to compare several later versions with the original. Some regrouping of the material is very desirable to overcome its repetitiveness. I have made my own selection of passages and have allowed Baxter to write his own book in his own words, even at some cost in neatness and polish and the preservation of some now archaic expressions. I have, however, modernized the spelling.' (p. 11 f.) Good orig. red boards. Lower edge stained.
