Richard Lander had previously served with Clapperton on the latter's second and last expedition into the African interior, his account of which was published in two volumes in 1830. That year Lander, together with his brother John, undertook an expedition to explore the course and termination of the Niger River. They travelled from Cape Coast Castle to Accra, Bogádry, Boussa (where Mungo Park was killed), and finally Yaoorie, a further one hundred miles upstream. Returning to Boussa, they began their descent of the river in canoes. During the journey they were robbed and mistreated by natives, and at Eboe (Ibo) were held for ransom by the King. Eventually they reached the mouth of the Niger, accomplishing their mission, and arrived back in England in July of 1831. Richard was awarded a gold medal, and John Murray, the publisher of the first edition, offered the brothers one thousand guineas for their journals, which were edited for publication by Lieut. Alexander Bridport Becher. cfGay 2777.

Reliures en demi basane aubergine, dos lisses décolorés ornés d'arabesques romantiques dorées, quelques frottements sur les coiffes, plats de papier marbré, gardes et contreplats de papier à la cuve, ex-libris armoriés encollés sur les contreplats, tranches mouchetées, reliures romantiques de l'époque. * Le voyageur anglais Richard Lander [1804-1834], typographe de formation, accompagna le capitaine Clapperton en Afrique lors de son dernier voyage. Revenu en Angleterre en 1828, Lander "y publia le récit du capitaine ainsi que son propre journal (1829). Il s'offrit au gouvernement anglais pour continuer les explorations relatives au cours du Niger. Son offre fut acceptée, et, conjointement avec son frère John, il partit de Plymouth le 9 janvier 1830, sur le brick Alerte, et le 22 février suivant il débarqua à Const-Castle, l'un des principaux établissements anglais en Guinée. Après un séjour de trois semaines, les voyageurs se dirigèrent sur Badagry, où ils atterrirent le 22 mars. Ils y furent assez mal reçus par le roi Adouly, et, dit Lander, 'si nous eussions trouvé parmi les Badagryotes un seul brave homme, nous aurions pris plaisir à proclamer ce fait ; mais il n'en fut pas ainsi : ils exercèrent sur nous sans scrupules leurs mauvais penchants. Les Badagryotes, quoique mahométans, font encore des sacrifices humains aux démons'. Les frères Lander se hâtèrent de quitter de si mauvais hôtes, et le 17 juin ils arrivèrent à Boussa, où ils visitèrent l'endroit où Mungo-Park et ses compagnons avaient trouvé la mort, en 1809 ; mais ils ne purent recueillir aucun détail sur la catastrophe qui termina la vie de ce courageux voyageur. Ils s'embarquèrent ensuite sur le Niger (Quorra dans le langage indigène), passèrent devant les villes de Congi, d'Inguazilligie, devant l'île de Pastastrie, et le 18 octobre ils descnedirent à Rabba, capitale du roi des Eaux-Noires, qui les reçut cordialement. Ils visitèrent ensuite Damuggou, Eboe, et le 18 novembre ils entrèrent dans la principale branche de Quorra, appelée la rivière Nun, et montèrent à bord d'un brick anglais, qui les conduisit à Fernando-Po (1er décembre). Le 20 janvier 1831 ils reprirent la mer sur le Caernarvon, mouillèrent à Rio-Janeiro, et le 9 juin jetèrent l'ancre à Portsmouth". Lors de ce voyage, les frères Lander purent constater que le Niger se jette dans la baie de Benin par plusieurs bras. Richard Lander mourut lors d'une deuxième expédition sur le Niger, en 1833-1834. Lander, Richard Lemon (1804 Truro/Cornwall - 1834 auf der Insel Fernando Poo im Golf von Guinea) englischer Afrikaforscher; 1825 begleitete Lander den englischen Afrikaforscher H. Clappertown auf eine Expedition in das Niger-Gebiet, als sie dieses erreicht hatten, starb Clapperton. Lander kehrte zunächst nach England zurück, setzte aber 1830 mit seinem Bruder John die Erforschung des Flussverlaufs Niger fort und entdeckte dessen Mündung im Golf von Benin.
