Ein dreiseitiges Vorwort Heinrichs, unterzeichnet ?München, Juni 1885", leitet die Erstausgabe ein. Auf Seite 349 schließt Richters Niederschrift mit dem ergreifenden Satz: ?Still knieten wir an das Bett und begleiteten die erlöste Seele unter Tränen mit unseren Gebeten in das Jenseits!" Die Tochter Maria starb am 16. April 1847 in Dresden-Altstadt, Äußere Rampische Gasse (später Pillnitzer Straße) 32. Aber dann hat Heinrich Richter noch auf 119 Seiten ?Auszüge aus Ludwigs Richters Tagebüchern und Briefe an Freunde" hinzugefügt, und dadurch verdient er unser aller Dank. Und von der ?Fünften, ergänzten Auflage" von 1890 an bietet Heinrich mit einem Vorwort von ?München, September 1889" auf 72 Seiten seine köstlichen ?Ergänzenden Nachträge". Hier führt der Sohn das Lebensbild seines Vaters liebreich und klug zu Ende. Karl Budde, der bedeutende Richterforscher, urteilt: ?Aus dieser einzigen schriftstellerischen Arbeit Heinrich Richters kann man ausreichend ersehen, welch feiner Geist, welch vielseitige Begabung und Bildung Heinrich Richter eigen war." (Ein kleiner Fehler unterläuft Budde kurz vorher in seiner Schrift ?Ludwig Richter, Altes und Neues", S. 68: schon in der 5. Auflage, nicht erst in der 6., sind die Ergänzenden Nachträge erschienen.) Und im Anschluß daran sind die Beigaben auf 233 Seiten angewachsen: Auszüge aus Ludwig Richters Jugendtagebüchern 1821-1837, Auszüge aus Ludwig Richters Jahresheften und Briefen an seinen Sohn 1845-1883, Freundesbriefe. Und jetzt rufen wir abermals: Hab Dank, Heinrich Richter! Freilich hat Heinrich auch hier seines Vaters Urtext vielfach verbessert ? verbösert und oft einfach umgeschrieben, und wer sich die Mühe macht, kann unseren Text, der den Urtext bietet, mit Heinrichs Änderungen hier und da vergleichen. Doch ? geben wir wirklich in unserer Ausgabe den Urtext der Briefe? Ja und Nein. Wir hielten uns streng an die Wortfolge, wandten aber die heutige Rechtschreibung an und die heutige Zeichensetzung. Aber leider konnten wir die Briefe nur in Auswahl geben.
