Elle est considérée comme l'actrice la plus représentative et la plus renommée au nive…au international du cinéma mexicain. Dolores del Río a tenu le premier rôle de films de Hollywood pendant le cinéma muet et elle fut une actrice très populaire au Mexique. Elle était la cousine de l'acteur Ramón Novarro. Sa riche famille a perdu tous ses biens pendant la révolution mexicaine. Un désir de reconstituer son style de vie confortable l'a conduite à suivre une carrière en tant qu'actrice. En 1921, elle épouse Jaime Martinez del Río, le couple émigre aux États-Unis. Le mariage a fini par un divorce mais Dolores del Río a conservé son nom d'épouse pour poursuivre une carrière en tant qu'actrice. Elle est admirée en tant qu'une des plus belles femmes de l'écran, et sa carrière s'est épanouie jusqu'à la fin de l'époque du muet : découverte par Edwin Carewe (comme Oliver Hardy) qui veut la lancer comme un Rudolph Valentino au féminin, un sex symbol latin, c'est cependant Raoul Walsh qui lui donne son statut de star avec Au service de la gloire ; ce dernier la dirige ensuite dans deux films historiques, une adaptation de Mérimée et l'autre sur la révolution russe. Carewe n'est pas en reste avec Résurrection (en) d'après Tolstoi et le mélodrame antiraciste Ramona, remake de D. W. Griffith et premier film sonorisé de la United Artists, qui remporte un triomphe. Del Rio remplace aussi l'actrice française Renée Adorée dans une production MGM, The Trail of '98, dirigée par Clarence Brown d'après le livre de Robert W. Service (d'habitude associé à Greta Garbo, autre nouvelle venue étrangère qui affole Hollywood). En 1930, elle épouse Cedric Gibbons, un des principaux directeurs artistiques de la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. En 1929, Evangeline (en) de Carewe l'impose dans le cinéma parlant. Mais malgré L'Oiseau de paradis de King Vidor et Madame du Barry de William Dieterle (dont elle interprète le rôle-titre), avec l'arrivée des films parlants elle est reléguée dans des rôles exotiques dans des productions secondaires, où elle croise George Sanders et John Wayne. Par ailleurs Del Rio refuse de participer au film Viva Villa ! qu'elle juge « anti-mexicain », Fay Wray prenant alors sa place. En 1934, Dolores del Río est victime de « la chasse aux sorcières » menée contre « les rouges » à Hollywood. Avec James Cagney, son compatriote et parent Ramón Novarro et Lupe Vélez (dont elle écrasait les plates-bandes en tant que « bomba latina »), elle est accusée de promouvoir le communisme en Californie, ce qui aura des conséquences sur sa carrière. Elle divorce de Cedric Gibbons en 1941, et entame une relation avec Orson Welles, de dix ans son cadet, qui est tombé amoureux d'elle. Classée dans les « Box Office Poisons » avec Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, Marlène Dietrich, Mae West et Katharine Hepburn, son amant produit et codirige pour elle Voyage au pays de la peur, dont l'échec la détermine à quitter Hollywood. Dolores Del Rio ne reviendra qu'occasionnellement pour John Ford (Dieu est mort avec Henry Fonda, Les Cheyennes) et Elvis Presley, dont elle joue la mère dans Les Rôdeurs de la plaine de Don Siegel. Elle revient au Mexique dès 1942 et commence à tourner en espagnol, ce qui lui apporte un grand succès au Mexique et en Amérique centrale au cours des vingt années suivantes. Elle fait sa dernière apparition à l'écran au côté d'Anthony Quinn et Katy Jurado dans The Children of Sanchez.

April 1983 in Newport Beach, Kalifornien), war eine mexikanische Filmschauspiele…rin. Sie wurde, vor allem im Rollenfach der exotischen Schönheit, ab Mitte der 1920er-Jahre zum Hollywood-Star. Leben und Werk Dolores del Río wurde in eine sehr vornehme und alteingesessene Familie geboren. Einer ihrer Cousins war der Schauspieler Ramón Novarro[1]. Nach Ballettunterricht am Konservatorium in Mexiko-Stadt, und später auch in Europa ging del Río 1925 zum Film nach Hollywood und debütierte in Das Mädel mit den Dollar-Millionen von Edwin Carewe. Im darauffolgenden Jahr bekam sie internationale Resonanz für ihre Darstellung einer jungen Französin in Raoul Walshs erfolgreichem Antikriegsfilm Rivalen und wurde unter die WAMPAS Baby Stars des Jahres gewählt. Sie galt als exotische Schönheit und wurde diesem Bild entsprechend besetzt. Die Schauspielerin drehte gemeinsam mit Carewe einige erfolgreiche Filme, die über die United Artists in den Verleih kamen. Dolores del Río mit Herbert Rawlinson (1929) Nachdem die Schauspielerin sich zunächst geweigert hatte, in Tonfilmen aufzutreten, gab sie schließlich 1930 ihr Tonfilmdebüt in The Bad One. Der Film war wenig erfolgreich und sie drehte einige Jahre gar nicht. Erst ein Wechsel zu RKO im Jahr 1932 revitalisierte ihre Karriere. In dem Südseeabenteuer Luana trat sie im selben Jahr unter der Regie von King Vidor auf. 1933 spielte sie in dem Musical Carioca eine Brasilianerin und wurde im Vorspann noch vor Fred Astaire und Ginger Rogers, die hier ihr Debüt als Leinwandpaar gaben, angekündigt. Zu ihrem Auftritt in Caliente, die Stadt der Freude (In Caliente) schrieb Friedrich Porges: ?Die Mexikaner selbst scheinen Spaß zu verstehen. Sonst würde die bezaubernde Mexikanerin Dolores del Rio sich nicht dazu hergeben, in einem Film wie Caliente mitzutun. Dolores trägt ihre südländische Schönheit mit Stolz und Genugtuung und wie eine Kostbarkeit durch den Film und sie tanzt mit königlicher Grazie. [?] Der unter Lloyd Bacons Regie flott gespielte, getanzte und gesungene Film gehört natürlich in erster Linie zur Sorte der Revuefilme. Tanzbilder mit splendider Ausstattung (dazu ins Ohr gehende Schlagermelodien) rücken immer aufs neue in den Rahmen der Lichtspielbühne und unterbrechen die nicht sehr kompakte, wenig aufregende aber amüsante Handlung eines Films, der allein schon um der Wiederbegegnung mit Dolores del Rio willen sehenswert ist!?[2] Trotz ihres starken Akzents drehte die Schauspielerin bis 1942 weiter in den USA, zuletzt neben Joseph Cotten die weibliche Hauptrolle in Von Agenten gejagt unter der Regie von Orson Welles. Unzufrieden mit den Rollenangeboten kehrte sie danach nach Mexiko zurück, wo sie die nationale Filmindustrie mitaktivierte und für weitere 25 Jahre als einer der Topstars des nationalen Kinos galt. Sie arbeitete bei ihrem ersten mexikanischen Film Flor silvestre 1943 mit dem Regisseur Emilio Fernández zusammen, weitere Arbeiten mit ihm folgten. Für ihre Hauptrolle in seinem Film Las Abandonadas erhielt sie 1946 einen Ariel bei der ersten Verleihung dieses mexikanischen Filmpreises. 1975 erhielt sie in Anerkennung ihrer 50-jährigen Filmkarriere den ?Premio Especial?, ein Ehrenpreis des mexikanischen Filmpreises Premio Ariel. Zu ihren wenigen Auftritten in US-amerikanischen Produktionen gehörten Don Siegels Flammender Stern aus dem Jahr 1960, in dem sie die Mutter von Elvis Presley spielte, sowie John Fords Cheyenne. Sie arbeitete auch an mexikanischen und US-amerikanischen Theatern sowie im Fernsehen. Die Schauspielerin war von 1929 bis 1941 mit Cedric Gibbons, dem Chefdesigner von MGM verheiratet. Marlene Dietrich bezeichnete Dolores del Río als die schönste Frau von Hollywood. Leben und Wirken Rod La Roque wurde als Sohn des Hotelmanagers Andrew Edward La Rocque de la Rou und seiner Frau Anna Rice geboren, die Familie war französischer Abstammung. Er hatte eine jüngere Schwester. Schon seit dem siebten Lebensjahr stand er als Kinderdarsteller auf Theaterbühnen. Nach Auftritten in diversen Vaudevilles begann seine eigentliche Filmkarriere im Alter von 14 Jahren mit dem Film The Snowman aus dem Jahre 1912, in dem er eine ungenannte kleinere Rolle spielte. The Snowman war der Auftakt für weitere Nebenrollen, die er für diverse Filmfirmen in der Zeit von 1912 bis 1920 spielte. Zu den großen Stars, mit denen er in dieser Zeit spielte, gehörten Billie Burke in Let?s get a divorce (1918) und Mabel Normand in The Venus Model (1918). Im Jahre 1918 zog La Roque nach New York, wo er von dem erfolgreichen Theater- und Filmagenten Edward Small unter Vertrag genommen wurde. Im selben Jahr folgten drei Filme für den Produzenten Samuel Goldwyn, dem späteren Mitbegründer von MGM. Doch La Rocque blieb seinem Prinzip treu und sah sich als unabhängiger, freier Schauspieler, der seine Dienste verschiedenen Filmgesellschaften anbot und sich zumeist kaum vertraglich an eine feste Firma band. Seinen Durchbruch als Schauspieler erlebte er 1923 unter der Regie von Cecil B. DeMille in dem Film Die zehn Gebote, welcher ihn in den 1920er-Jahren zu einem anerkannten und populären Star in Hollywood machte.
