He called in that grand dame of detection, the psychoanalyst-sleuth Mrs. Beatrice Lestrange Bradley. The innocuous Miss Ferris wasn't popular among her fellow teachers, several of whom feared she would expose their guilty secrets. But these transgressions, for the most part, appeared too inconsequential to end in murder. "Death at the Opera" (Death in the Wet in the U.S.) is an early mystery by Gladys Mitchell, lumped with Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers by contemporary critics as one of England's "big three" women mystery writers. Mitchell wrote 66 mysteries featuring Mrs. Bradley between 1929 and her death in 1983. Dick Rouston claimed Jane Cowrer murdered his fiancée, which made for a pretty awkward situation, since Jane was equally convinced t…hat Dick had murdered her. No, this isn't a ghost story, although there is an old black piano that appears to play by itself every night and can only be heard by Jane. Of course, Jane isn't really Jane. She's wealthy Gloria Rouston--or at least she was until someone pushed her off a bridge one night while she was vacationing with Dick and several gold-digging friends and relatives. She managed to escape that attempt on her life with only a concussion and a few scratches. She figured the killer(or killers) would just finish her off if she returned home, so she used the wad of money in her purse to pay for a little plastic surgery and went back to her home town to do a little sleuthing, hoping that no one would see plain old Gloria in the new body and face sported by the now glamorous Jane. And she didn't really set out to marry John Cowrer, the nephew of the woman who helped nurse her back to health, but she had to admit that a new husband provided excellent cover, provided you didn't think too much about the bigamy laws. It's another outrageous plot from two of the most inventive mystery writers of the 1930s and 1940s, although the tone in this 1948 novel is a bit darker than usual. Pudim, Rob (illustratore). Just about everyone agreed on that point. Agatha, howe…ver, despised Em's slovenly ways and was forever cleaning up after her. If she could, she would have fired Em ages ago. But an odd clause in her father's will prevented her from doing that. Now Em was dead and Agatha assumed she must have done it, although she had no recollection of killing her. But lately, Agatha had been prone to walking in her sleep and she figured it was during one of these nocturnal rambles that she did in the disgusting old creature. What's done is done, Agatha thought, and so she propped Em up in a rocking chair and squirreled her away in a sealed closet. There'd be time enough later to figure out what to do with the body. Of course Em was soon missed. Cleanliness might not have been her forte but her food tasted good and Agatha's cooking was a poor substitute. In fact, people were beginning to get a bit testy at meal times. And Christine and Allen, two doctors who had sleeping rooms as well as medical offices in the boarding house, were naturally testy-at least with each other, having once been engaged back before Christine went to medical school. Although Agatha had the most to gain from Em's death, Inspector Lewis had plenty of other suspects among Em's relatives and the other boarders. But everything got a lot more complicated when Em's corpse went missing and things started to go bump in the night in the basement.
