Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Lhwyd, the illegitimate son of a father ruined by the Civil War, had to make his own way in the world. A competent botanist before going up to Oxford as a student, he spent much time there at the Botanical Garden before being appointed to the newly established Ashmolean Museum, where he became its second Keeper. This biography traces the development of his research interests from botany to palaeontology - and then to antiquarian studies, which led to him studying the Celtic languages as a source of linguistic evidence in historical studies. Thus he became the founder of Celtic Studies. Lhwyd's diverse research interests were underpinned by an evidence-led methodology - the collection (by personal observation where possible) of material, which would then be classified as a preliminary to drawing conclusions - and, as such, his is a valuable contribution to the history of science.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. A critical biography of an influential seventeenth-century Welsh intellectual. Edward Lhwyd, an illegitimate son of a father ruined by the English Civil War, made his own way in the world, finally laying the foundation for modern Celtic studies. A competent botanist as a child, he spent his collegiate days at Oxford University in the Botanical Garden before being appointed the second keeper of the newly established Ashmolean Museum. This biography traces the development of his wide-ranging research interests beginning with botany and paleontology and leading into antiquarian studies and Celtic languages. Developing his own scientific method based on naturalistic observation, Lhwyd left an indelible mark on the history of science. The first full-length biography of Edward Lhwyd, this is an important contribution to the history of science in the fields of botany, palaeontology and linguistics. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. New Ed. Pap. Modest shelf-wear to wraps, else very good This volume is unique in offering a comprehensive discussion of the subject. It will appeal widely to medievalists, to Welsh and Celtic scholars and to those non-specialists who have felt the fascination of the figure of Arthur and wish to know more. Little, if anything, is known historically of Arthur, yet for centuries the romances of Arthur and his court dominated the imaginative literature of Europe in many languages. The roots of this vast flowering of the Arthurian legend are to be found in early Welsh tradition and this volume gives an account of the Arthurian literature produced in Wales, in both Welsh and Latin, during the Middle Ages. The distinguished contributors offer a comprehensive view of recent scholarship relating to Arthurian literature in early Welsh and other Brythonic sources. The volume includes chapters on the "historical" Arthur, Arthur in early Welsh verse, the legend of Merlin, the tales of Culhwch ac Olwen, Geraint, Owain, Peredur, The Dream of Rhonabwy and Trystan ac Esyllt. Other chapters investigate the evidence for the growth of the Arthurian theme in the Triads and in the Historia Regum Britanniae of Geoffrey of Monmouth, and discuss the Breton connection and the gradual transmission of the legend to the non-Celtic world.
