A Very Good book in a Fine dust jacket. "Special Publication Number 37" of the California Historical Society. Most of the writings in this book originally appeared as articles in the Sacramento Daily Union. Titles of main contents: "How a Comet Struck the Earth," "Twenty Years Ago: The Brooklyn 'Mormons' in California," "Yerba Buena--1846" [five articles], "The Battle of Natividad" [three articles], "With Fremont: The Night after the Fray; March of the California Battalion; A Christmas on the Santa Barbara Mountains; The Close of the Campaign," "Yerba Buena--1847: The goodly Vine and its Golden Fruit," "San Francisco--1848: The peaceful Eve of the riotous Golden Morn; The first Drops of the Golden Shower; The first Party to the Gold Mines," and "Five Poems: Blowing Up the Wind; May Rhymings; September Rhymes--Sunshine; Crow; Rio Sacramento." Adapted from the Preface: Any Century-Old Journal which comes to light merits a critical examination of its worth. When the writting deals with California and the United States Navy during the period 1846-1847, its acceptnce seems assured, provided that it is written well and that it has reasonably sustained interest. The present work so qualifies. In Dr. Duvall s journal pass in review Californians, adopted Clifornians, and visitors, both civilian and of the services.
