The large-type text, in clear and direct language, identifies each creature. From title to text, a questioning format invites young readers to enter this world. An afterward details the habitats of the alligator in the U.S. Cortesi's Explore a Spooky Swamp (National Geographic, 1978), for a slightly older age range, covers similar territory but includes a few more creatures. While Hirschi's text does little more than identify swamp creatures, it is sure to inspire an appreciation for wildlife and conservation in the very young.
