Besler arbeitete ca. 7 Jahre an dem Buch und stellte um die 12 Graveure ein, die auf 367 Platten mit über 1000 Botanischen Motiven gravierten. Der Auftraggeber für dieses Werk war Johann Conrad von Gemmingen, Fürstbischof von Eichstätt.
