Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Scholarly research does not develop in an historical vacuum. The questionsaddressed and the vantage points from where they are studied, are closelyrelated to the social and cultural contexts in which the researchers areworking and living. This holds in a particular way true for liturgicalresearch done in the twentieth century. The research carried out in thisperiod was clearly influenced by the changes that various forms ofChristianity, and more in general religion as such, went through duringthis century. The clearest evidence of the strong impact these changes hadon liturgical practice is provided by a series of sweeping liturgicalreforms taking place in the second half of the century. The research ofliturgical scholars was indirectly or directly influenced by the socialand cultural processes that were taking place. These processes unavoidablyhad their effect on the questions that were raised and on the foci thatwere chosen and it also coloured, at least to some extent, theinterpretations given to the data studied. During the last few decades, these issues have frequently and thoroughly been discussed by the Dutchliturgical scholars who are cooperating within the open,inter-confessional and interdisciplinary setting of the Institute forLiturgical and Ritual Studies located at the Tilburg University.Apartfrom furthering reflection about the various scholarly paradigms that werefollowed among these scholars, these discussions and conversations alsoaroused a historiographic curiosity, especially with regard to thedevelopment of liturgical scholarship in the Netherlands. How didliturgical studies develop in the course of this century in theNetherlands? What scholarly approaches were predominant? What paradigmsand shifts of paradigm can one discern? And how did these relate to thedevelopment of liturgical practice and the underlying religious, culturaland historical processes? In several respects the Dutch case was unique, due to specific historical circumstances. These considerations led to thedecision to devote a common research project to the history of liturgicalstudies in the Netherlands and this volume is the final outcome of thisproject. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. There has been a major trend among social scientists and historians to assume that the history of modernity can be studied without taking into consideration religion as an important factor. This in contrast to premodern societies in which religion would have played such a predominant and all-embracing role that a total symbiosis between religion and society would have existed. Both of these views are challenged by the authors of this volume. They claim that neither of them does justice to the complexity of the relationship between society and religion. They propose a theoretical framework that fully addresses this complexity by focussing on the variegated active ways in which religious agents (groups and individuals) process(ed) their societal and religious contexts in the modern era as well as in the premodern period. Viewed from this perspective, the history of Christianity appears as the heterogeneous result of an ongoing and unceasing selective processing by all Christians - and non-Christians - of their environment. The application of this new theoretical and methodological framework sheds light - often in a surprising and unexpected way - on various processes in the history of Christianity: the conflict-ridden parting of the ways between Jews and Christians; the emergence and development of early Christian rituals; the formation of a Cathar Counter- Church; the emergence of new forms of Christianity in North America; the complicated and ambiguous evolution of Roman Catholicism in modernity. Published as Volume VIII in the 'Jewish and Christian Perspectives Series', this work examines how Christian and Jewish traditions have established their foundational texts and authoritative sources, shaping theological and historical discourse.
