On a quiet September night in 1776, Revolutionary War Sergeant Ezra Lee manuvered a strange new little vessel out from Manhattan toward the British fleet anchored of New York City. The vessel was the first submarine, created by David Bushnell specifically designed "for the destruction of vessels of war". Its mission , untimately unsuccessful, was to move under the surface and attach a powerful explosive device to the hull of the British flagship HMS Eagle. This work not only gives the history of Bushnell's invention but also gives the story of the launching two centuries later of a recreation of the Turtle.
