Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. Alice Corbin (1881-1949) was part of an inner circle of writers and artists on the national scene in the early twentieth century. Corbin lived and worked as a writer in Chicago prior to moving to New Mexico for health reasons. A graduate of the University of Chicago, Corbin was a frequent contributor to publications including the Chicago Tribune and the Saturday Evening Post and worked as assistant editor at Poetry: A Magazine of Verse (a publication still in existence). Corbin published several works of poetry in her lifetime. Red Earth: Poems of New Mexico, originally published in 1920 and long unavailable, was a radical book for its time, drawing on poetic techniques of Native American myths and Hispanic culture. This new edition includes a biographical sketch of Corbin's life and contributions to art and culture. It is illustrated with twenty-nine masterworks, including works by Georgia O'Keeffe, Andrew Dasburg, and Alfred Stieglitz, from the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe. …

Hardback. Condizione: Good. Mabel Dodge Luhan (1879-1962) was a political, social, and cultural visionary; salon hostess; and collector of genius in almost every field of modernism--painting, photography, drama, psychology, radical politics, social reform, and Native American rights. Luhan spent her adult life building utopian communities, first, as an expatriate in Florence (1905-12) working to recreate the Renaissance; next as a "New Woman" in Greenwich Village (1912-15), hosting one of the most famous salons in American history; and finally, in Taos, the "New World" (1918-47), bringing together a community of artists, writers, and social reformers including writers D. H. Lawrence, Jean Toomer, Mary Austin, and Frank Waters; choreographer Martha Graham; and anthropologists Elsie Clews Parsons and John Collier. With Luhan as their hostess, these European and American talents found inspiration in the mesas, mountains, Hispanic villages, and Indian pueblos of northern New Mexico. Modernist works by painters and photographers, including Marsden Hartley, John Marin, Georgia O'Keeffe, Ansel Adams, Rebecca Strand, and Paul Strand, are featured alongside indigenous art that inspired their modernist sensibilities--Native American painters like San Ildefonso Pueblo's Awa Tsireh and Taos Pueblo's Pop Chalee, whose work Mabel supported, and traditional Hispano devotional art collected by Luhan.…

Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. She was the most peculiar common denominator that society, literature, art and radical revolutionaries ever found in New York and Europe. So claimed a Chicago newspaper reporter in the 1920s of Mabel Dodge Luhan, who attracted leading literary and intellectual figures to her circle for over four decades. Not only was she mistress of a grand salon, an American Madame de Stael, she was also a leading symbol of the New Woman: sexually emancipated, self-determining, and in control of her destiny. In many ways, her life is the story of America's emergence from the Victorian age. Lois Rudnick has written a unique and definitive biography that examines all aspects of Mabel Dodge Luhan's real and imagined lives, drawing on fictional portraits of Mabel, including those by D H Lawrence, Carl Van Vechten, and Gertrude Stein, as well as on Mabel's own voluminous memoirs, letters, and fiction. Rudnick not only assesses Mabel as muse to men of genius but also considers her seriously as a writer, activist, and spirit of the age.…
