Hardcover. Condizione: Poor. No Jacket. VOLUME II ONLY. Poor condition. Early printing (1850 at foot of title page with 1849 copyright on verso). i-vi, 7-495 pages. Hardcover: H 19.5cm x L 12.75cm. Contemporary green cloth boards rubbed with slender wear at edges particularly at bumped corners; front board and its adjoining ffly and title leaf only tenuously attached (but rear board firm); spine cloth lacking with underlying paper back-strip exposed lengthwise with quires visible at ends. Front free endpaper removed; modest personal hand-numbered bookplate of Tuscaloosa, Alabama banker James H. Fitts (James Harris Fitts, 1830-1912) on front pastedown; foxing/toning strongest on several early and late leaves with mostly light to mild interior occurrences with some stains and soiling; upper fore-edge chips to pages 493-495 but not affecting text. Text block remains firm. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids in securing the aforementioned tenuous front board and modestly enhances the book's compromised shelf presence. Stray volume of the first posthumously gathered collection of Edgar Allan Poe's work with poems on pages 7-214 (leading off with "The Raven," and "Lenore" and concluding with "Eureka: A Prose Poem") and miscellaneous writings on pages 215-495. Attesting to early printing (second?) status is that "choir" appears with correct spelling on page 46. Needs to be re-backed and restitched and thus sold as is. …

Prior owner's name inked to second fly leaf, before the title page; with some color transfer to the first fly leaf, preceding. Pages edgeworn, with intermittent soil to margins throughout; heavily foxed. Text else unmarked. With contributions from Edgar Allan Poe, James Fenimore Cooper, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and others. Includes the first-ever appearance of Poe's 'The Conquering Worm.'.…
