Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. [viii], 312 pp. Original cloth. Very Good. With: card inscribed and initialed by Russell and dated 3.XI.33 affixed to rear pastedown. "Historically speaking, biologists and philosophers of biology paid little attention to Interpretation despite favorable reviews shortly after publication in both Nature and The American Journal of Sociology. The possible reasons for this neglect are numerous, though historian of biology Nils Roll-Hansen argues that this is likely because mechanistic biology continued to thrive throughout the central decades of the twentieth century despite contests from Russell, Joseph Woodger, and others. Recently, Russell's Interpretation has received attention from philosopher of biology Jason Scott Robert as an element of the philosophical foundation of modern epigenetic and developmental research. Certainly Interpretation is a valuable source for understanding the historical context of mid-twentieth-century critical analysis of mechanistic biology and arguments for the organismal perspective in biology" (Mark A. Ulett, "The Interpretation of Development and Heredity (1930), by Edward Stuart Russell", Arizona State University Embryo Project Encyclopedia, 2011).…

4to. (12 x 9 1/2 inches). Edition of 50. [i]-viii [1]-150. 158 pp. 30 numbered and card-mounted albumen silver photograps with printed titles. Half-title, Photo of Moore's Lake, Title printed red and black, List of Views, Table of Contents, Introductory, Chapters I-VII, Photographs II-XXX. Contemporary half dark green morocco over pebbled cloth boards, rebacked retaining original spine with 5 raised bands, all edges gilt. Provenance: Rochester Historical Society (blindstamp on title page) A key early photobook on the American West, with albumen photographs by Russell, whose work "stands alongside Eadweard Muybridge in its aesthetic power and technical virtuosity." [Oakland Museum of California Art] This impressive rare book is an important work of photographically illustrated Western Americana prepared by the famous geologist Ferdinand V. Hayden. It is an amalgam of geographic and geologic data, complemented with striking, dramatic landscape photographs taken along the rail-line of the Transcontinental Railroad. The photographs, taken by Russell, appeared in a slightly larger format the previous year in his unobtainable album, The Great West Illustrated. The views along the Union Pacific line are intended to illustrate the geology which can be observed from the train. Despite the title, all the photographs are of areas within the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada, with twelve in Wyoming, sixteen in Utah, and two in California. Hayden wrote: "The pictures have been arranged so as to commence with the first range of mountains west of Cheyenne, and to continue thence to the Salt Lake Valley with the view that the book may be used as a guide by those who will avail themselves of the grand opportunities for geological study." "In using Russell's photographs as illustrations in Sun Pictures of Rocky Mountain Scenery, geologist Hayden took the long view of history, emphasizing the value of pictures as documents of geological change while professing indifference to the more recent past. For Hayden, the geologic features of the West were like an open book, affording the educated reader the opportunity to understand millions of years of geologic history." [Sandweiss] Russell ranks as one of the major landscape photographers who shaped our perception of the American West in the 19th Century. During the Civil War, Russell worked for Mathew Brady and served as a captain in the U.S. Military Railroad Construction Corps. In 1865, he became the official photographer for the Union Pacific Railroad, and documented the building of the Transcontinental Railroad during the years 1868-1869. At Promontory he photographed the meeting of the trains (U.P. No. 119 and Jupiter) on the tracks. After his work with the Union Pacific, Russell was a photographer for the Clarence King Survey and later worked for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Weekly. This survey expedition includes many of Russell's iconic landscape views in which he often juxtaposed monumental geological elements to manmade structures and individual men and women. According to a note by James Stevenson in the copy reviewed in Margolis, only fifty copies of this book were issued. Stevenson may have had some inside knowledge, as he worked with Hayden, who was its director, on the U.S. Geological and Geographic Survey of the Territories. Such works illustrated with original photographs were rarely issued in great numbers due to the great expense in materials and labor to create such books. The photographs are as follows: I. Moore's Lake. II. Granite Rock. III. Skull Rock. IV. Malloy's Cut. V. Dial Rock. VI. Laramie Valley. VII. Snow and Timber Line. VIII. High Bluffs. IX. Bitter Creek Valley. X. Burning Rock Cut. XI. The two volumes contain a total of 239pp., 12mo, in ink and pencil, with entries dating from between 29 November 1912 and 28 March 1950. In fair overall condition, with light signs of age and wear. In two Keuffel & Esser notebooks, each in remains of brown calf binding, the first with 'MINING | TRANSIT BOOK | 363' stamped on front cover, and the second with 'Cross Section Book | 375 S'. In manuscript on cover of first volume: '19 Dec. | The Psilomelane D | of the Francis | by | Don | Under Prof. A. C. L '. The two volumes mainly consist of rough notes, statistics and diagrams - on samples, deposits, assay returns, extracts, surface workings, stadia shots - relating to geological and mineralogical surveys, mostly in California. The first volume dates from between 29 November 1912 (Fort Baker) and 23 January 1917 (Latouche), and contains doctoral work by the author while a geology student under Professor A. C. Lawson (the identifier and namer of the San Andreas Fault) at the University of California, Berkeley. (Named colleagues in some of these surveys are A. R. Whitman and E. F. Davis, the latter at the time engaged in what was still considered in 1984 as 'some of the most cogently argued, evenly balanced, and thoroughly researched work' on Franciscan geology (M. C. Blake, ed., 'Franciscan Geology of Northern California').) The second volume contains entries written between 5 September 1917 (Hayden Hill) and 28 March 1950 (Yuba Gravel Range, Nevada County). Towards the end of the second volume is a page dated 15 March 1950, and headed 'Work in Court House until 10 AM', perhaps suggesting that the author was by that time employed as a California state geologist (a section of the same volume relating to the Decanso Mine seems to indicate that he was also working as a consultant). The first volume relates exclusively to California, and mostly to the San Francisco Bay Area, with entries on Fort Baker, Marin County; the Robert Friggel Ranch in Livermore, Alameda County; the Lucky Star Mine in Hayden Hill, Lassen County; and Red Rock Island. Other places surveyed in the first volume are: 'Tesla-Carnegie' in San Joaquin County, the Hess Mine in Imperial County, and 'Latouche'. The second volume contains more information relating to the Lucky Star and Hess mines, but mostly concerns: the Descanso Mine, San Diego County; 'Laceiba' [La Ceiba, Honduras]; Little Colorado; 'Cameron Mine' [Deer Lodge, Montana?]; Donner Mine ['North Star Consolidated quartz mine'] in Placer County; Arctic Mine in Canyon Creek, Nevada County; 'Sheba' [Queen of Sheba Mine, Inyo County]; 'Gray Eagle Vein' [Arizona?]; and Yuba Gravel Range, Nevada County. VOLUME ONE: 93pp. The first page carries an index, with the following entries: 'Ft Baker'; 'Livermore' [in text: 'Friggels Ranch | Livermore Calif']; 'Red Rock' ['Red Rock Island']; 'Conn Valley' ['Conn Valley deposit'; 'Conn Valley. | October 18-19 1913. | With Davis; E. F.']; 'Challenger report abstract'; 'Davis' Abstract' ['E. F. Davis's Report']; 'Assay Returns'; 'Tesla-Carnegie'; 'Extracts' and 'Lucky Star Mine' ['January 8th '15 | Hayden Hill | Lucky Star Mine | Sampling']. Headings in text relate to 'Hess Mine' and 'Latouche'. One of the pages relating to Red Rock Island is headed: 'March 22 1913 | with Davis & Whitman | Same voyage. windy & cold'. And one of those on Fort Baker, dated 12 October 1913, has: '(with ". K. Campbell).' Another page is headed: 'Conn Valley. | October 18-19 1913. | With Davis; E. F.' VOLUME TWO: 146pp. First page headed: 'Hayden Hill | Sept 5 1917'. Eleven pages on the Descanso Mine, California, dated 19 September 1931, include sections headed 'Water', 'Assays', 'Terms', 'Crosby's Terms' and 'History'. There are four pages of diagrams of Donner (as 'Doner') Mine, Place County, and thirteen pages of diagrams of the survey area of Yuba Gravel Range, Nevada County. (An entry dated 25 March 1950 on 'Yuba Gravel Range | Stadia Shots' is followed by one three days later on 'East Rim.…
