The dust jacket has chips at both ends of spine, a ragged head edge of the rear panel, a complete vertical split at spine, repaired on underside with tape. Jacket is in a new mylar sleeve.

Stamp from previous bookseller on inside of front cover, as well as pencil notation. This copy is good condition. The paper wrappers have separated from each other in the bottom third of the spine, but otherwise remain attached. An approximately one inch wide band of discolouration on the page bearing the illustration. Number 24 of the first series of Ariel poetry pamphlet published by Faber Faber from 1927-1931. Each volume was accompanied by an illustration by a different artist. This volume contains the poem Inscription On a Fountain-Head by Peter Quennell, and English poet and writer. He started his career writing poetry, but made the change to writing prose, with which he became particularly known for his literary biographers. He also worked as a journalist, editor, and critic. The illustration in this volume is by Albert Rutherston (1881-1953). Born in England, he began his career as realist painter before shifting to a more decorative style.

Line drawings printed at the Curwen Press and colored pochoir stencils by Jean Saude in Paris. Largely unopened and with the Commentary letter loosely inserted. A better than very good copy with a mildly tanned spine.
