Inserted loosely into the book is an original type-written poem by Feeney called Double Entendre and dedicated to "Grace and Ruth from L.F. 28 May, 1931". We are unable to find this poem published elsewhere, so it is a valuable addition to the volume. Feeney was an American Jesuit priest whose rigid, literal interpretation of dogma brought him into conflict with his Jesuit superiors. Amongst other things, he argued that only those physically baptized with water as Catholics could be saved, rejecting the doctrines of "baptism of blood" and "baptism of desire". After refusing to recant his views (some of which were deemed to be antisemitic) he was excommunicated for disobedience by Pope Pius XIII in 1953. Original paper covers with cloth spine strip and black gilt label on front cover. Covers worn and somewhat water stained. Previous owner's inscription 'To my dear Grace with love from Prit' on flyleaf. No.1 in The Thought Foundation's Poetry Series.
