Slichter uses stories, personalities, historical episodes, and questions about scientific life to explore scientific discovery and how scientists and mathematicians think. Subjects range from the informal clubs and social gatherings associated with early scientific culture and the Royal Society to Newton and the Principia, mathematical genius, teaching, specialization, industrialism, and science's relationship with society. The title of this book refers to the meetings in London taverns and private houses, beginning about 1650, of English scientists and men of means and philosophical interests.
